East Jerusalem: no state in sightStuart Reigeluth - Al-Ahram Weekly - " East Jerusalem is thus completely surrounded and isolated from the rest of the Palestinian territories. The consolidation of "Greater Jerusalem" is also effectively cutting the West Bank in two, destroying the possibility for a territorially contiguous Palestinian state. "24/5/2007
Out of bounds Lily Galili - Haaretz - Despite the blue Israeli identity cards held by residents of Shuafat Refugee Camp [which was unilaterally annexed to Jerusalem in 1967 ed.], the Israeli authorities have now decided that they are not in fact Jerusalemites.19/5/2007

What are the Palestinians Thinking? Joharah Baker - MIFTAH - "While Israel’s settlement policies have continued undeterred since 1967 in and around Jerusalem, this policy has recently taken on a particular vengeance. Last week, Israeli authorities announced a plan to build 20,000 new illegal homes on the outskirts of East Jerusalem as part of three new Jewish neighborhoods. Such actions, coupled with Israel’s discriminatory measures against the Palestinians such as the Apartheid Wall and its Kafkaesque family reunification laws, are severely undermining the Palestinian Arab presence in Jerusalem." 17/5/2007
Oh, Jerusalem! Uzi Benziman - Haaretz - "From an urban and an architectural point of view as well (including the environs of the Western Wall), the annexation is not a success story." 16/5/2007
...
Forty years of `unity` Editorial - Haaretz - " It`s no wonder that half the high school students in East Jerusalem drop out of school." 16/5/2007

Red Cross Report Says Israel Disregards Humanitarian Law STEVEN ERLANGER - NT Times - "...accuses Israel of a “general disregard” for “its obligations under international humanitarian law and the law of occupation in particular.”" 16/5/2007
Israelis plan more homes on occupied landConal Urquhart - The Guardian - While Israel says that it supports the creation of a Palestinian state, its building projects - which include walls, fences, bypasses and tunnels as well as settlements - restrict the amount of land that would be available to the new state. 12/5/2007
Committee approves construction of three new Jewish neighborhoods in East Jerusalem Meron Rappaport - Haaretz - The Walaja area is in southwestern Jerusalem, and consists primarily of territory annexed from the West Bank following the Six Day War. Construction in Walaja would create continuity between the Gilo and Malha neighborhoods of the capital and Beitar Ilit and the Etzion bloc. Some of the land in the area is owned by Jewish entrepreneurs, some is defined as state land, and some is defined as being in absentee ownership.12/5/2007
Israelis plan more homes on occupied landConal Urquhart-The Guardian-"By severing East Jerusalem from the rest of the West Bank," Mr Erekat said, "the Jerusalem-area wall and settlements mean no viable Palestinian state, no Palestinian capital in East Jerusalem, and thus no viable two-state solution."11/5/2007
A Little House in the Darkness or Where is the Al-Kurd Family’s Living Room?Meir Margalit - ICHAD - "In the case called “the State of Israel vs. Diana Al-Kurd” the state wishes to revoke the widow benefits that Mrs. Al-Kurd receives due to her husband’s death, since at the time of his passing, the deceased lived outside the Jerusalem city limits. To be precise, not really outside the city limits, but most of the house was outside the city limits, since the municipal boundary cut the house in two – part within the city limits and part in the Occupied Territories." 10/5/2007
Keeping Jerusalem Jewish Meron Benvenisti - Haaretz - "People used to believe that the Jewish majority in Jerusalem could be maintained by the massive construction of neighborhoods around the city`s edges; now what is being advocated is the removal of Arab neighborhoods on the fringes of the city, which would reduce the number of Arab residents in an artificial, bureaucratic way. " 10/5/2007
Israeli forces demolish centre for disabled children in east Jerusalem Ma`an - "Our Jerusalem correspondent reported that the Israeli military forced the disabled children to evacuate the building and then began demolishing it." 9/5/2007

Recommendations include "removing Arab neighborhoods from the city`s municipal area".8/5/2007
Solidarity concert brings together Jewish, Palestinian neighbors Daphna Berman - Haaretz - Pulled together by the Arab-Jewish Center of Jabal Mukaber, which operates under the slogan "neighbors to neighbors," the concert and reception drew some 300 people, half Jewish and half Palestinian. "The wall would separate people from their families, the center of their lives, their source of livelihood and their medical facilities," said Hillel Bardin, a resident of Talpiyot-Arnona and one of the event organizers. "We`re seeking an alternative route around the village rather than through it. If security can be achieved without destroying these people`s lives, it is certainly preferable." 5/5/2007
