|Israel plan to build in East Jerusalem harms peace process, says U.S. official ||Akiva Eldar - Haaretz - "...seizing land retroactively, for the sake of a settlement that was not long ago classified as `the largest illegal outpost in the West Bank,` is nothing short of an outrage," said Shlomo Zacharia, one of the lawyers representing Yesh Din. ||28/12/2009|
|ARIJ Report On Increased Israeli Violations Against Palestinian Homes in Jerusalem||by Saed Bannoura -

|25 leftists arrested in east Jerusalem ||Ronen Medzini - Ynet - Rabbi Arik Ascherman told Ynet: "The settlers claim that the houses were owned by Jews before 1948. I doubt if this is true, but even if it is, we must ask whether Arabs also have the right to return to what were their homes before the State`s establishment. If they don`t do so, what we have here is a case of discrimination."

|Silently Stealing Jerusalem ||Joharah Baker -
MIFTAH - The policy is aimed at making it as difficult as possible for Palestinians to remain in their homes in Jerusalem. It demands that Palestinians living in Jerusalem prove that every element of their lives is cemented within the boundaries of the Israeli municipal borders for Jerusalem. That is, rent, land taxes, schools, work, immunization records, phone bills and a slew of other proofs must be ready at any minute to provide as evidence of a person`s life in Jerusalem. If something doesn`t add up, this could mean bidding farewell to any rights in the city, namely the right to live in your own home. ||15/12/2009|

|Another weekend in Sheikh Jarrah||David Shulman - A grey, cold Friday afternoon. Winter. Foretaste of rain. The weekly march to Sheikh Jarrah, to the Palestinian houses that have been invaded by Israeli settlers. As usual, we march to the drums, shouting our slogans. |Another EU policy statement will not stop Israel`s colonization ||By Hasan Abu Nimah -
The Electronic Intifada
"Israel started a preemptive campaign against a EU statement on the Middle East session even before it was formally presented for discussion by EU ministers this week on whether to adopt it. Israeli spokesmen expressed outrage at what they saw as an EU effort to "divide" Jerusalem"||11/12/2009|
|A timely wake-up call - an interview with Mahdi Abdul Hadi ||Source: Bitterlemons
"Europe cannot simply leave determining the fate of Jerusalem to final status negotiations because Israel is Judaizing the city every day, making it more and more Israeli. The city is daily losing its character and identity, its history and culture to become an exclusively Jewish city."||11/12/2009|
|Israeli pressure must be resisted ||by Ghassan Khatib -
"The draft posits positions, including on the issue of Jerusalem, that have caused fierce debate in European policy-making circles. Such debate indicates that there is a growing feeling among Europeans in general as well as their governments that Israeli actions in Jerusalem are exceeding all acceptable limits and are in clear violation of international law."
|The Land Research Center: “14 Homes Demolished In Jerusalem In November”||Saed Bannoura - IMEMC - LRC further said that the violations against Jerusalem are parallel to ongoing violations against the West Bank as Israel issued 825 orders targeting Palestinian homes since the beginning of 2009. Israel also uprooted 14000 trees in the West Bank this year and act that directly violates the International Law and the Fourth Geneva Conventions.||8/12/2009|
|EU foreign ministers: Jerusalem must be joint capital of Israel, Palestinian state ||Barak Ravid - Haaretz - "The EU will not recognize any changes to the pre-1967 borders, including with regard to Jerusalem," said the EU ministerial draft. ||8/12/2009|
|Armageddon, Straight Ahead||Arik W. Ascherman - Rabbis for Human Rights - Because this is Jerusalem. As I wrote a week and a half ago, I see a Palestinian anger burning so strong that, unlike what usually happens, neither the threat of arrest or the use of overwhelming force is a deterrent. That means a third intifada. That means that the fact that the world community forcing Israel into a settlement freeze (perhaps) may be too little too late. That means that the Obama administration remains a laughingstock at best, and in many quarters the U.S. is again the subject of scorn and derision. ||3/12/2009|
|Israel stripped thousands of Jerusalem Arabs of residency in 2008 ||Nir Hasson - Haaretz - Last year set an all-time record for the number of Arab residents of East Jerusalem who were stripped of residency rights by the Interior Ministry. Altogether, the ministry revoked the residency of 4,577 East Jerusalemites in 2008 - 21 times the average of the previous 40 years. In the first 40 years of Israeli rule over East Jerusalem combined, from 1967 to 2007, the ministry deprived only 8,558 Arabs of their residency rights - less than double the number who lost their permits last year alone. Thus of all the East Jerusalem Arabs who have lost their residency rights since 1967, about 35 percent did so in 2008.

|Fifth Sheikh Jarah House taken over by settlers ||Saed Bannoura - IMEMC/AP/Huffington Post - For the The fifth time, a home in East Jerusalem`s Sheikh Jarah Neighbourhood was taken over by nationalist-religious settlers and its Palestinian inhabitants evicted. The act was in accordance with a court order, upholding the manifestly biased legal position by which Palestinian title deeds from before 1948 are null and void while those held by Jews are valid and can be used as the basis for claiming property. ||1/12/2009|
|Netanyahu Government worried over impending EU declaration on Jerusalem ||Barak Ravid - Haaretz - At the initiative of Sweden, current holder of the EU presidency, the European Union is expected to officially call next week for Jerusalem to serve as the capitals of both Israel and Palestine, and imply that the EU would recognize a unilateral Palestinian declaration of statehood. ||1/12/2009|
|Sheikh Jarrah is no fairy tale||Galit Hasan-Rokem - Haaretz - For all the bad feelings generated by the event itself, what is worse is the feelings that surface when thinking of the absence of wisdom and integrity entailed in defending the rights of provocative extremists to settle in this neighborhood. A few such extremists participated in the event. Their fiery hatred directed at the Palestinians as well as the Jewish demonstrators was sickening, as was the thought of the danger of violence that is now being carried out in other places in the occupied territories.
|EU Challenges Israel`s Claim to Jerusalem ||Britain Eakin - MIFTAH - Yet what is interesting is that the EU commission of Jerusalem has never made its report public before, and Israel has always pressured them not to, citing fear that it might exacerbate what it terms is the already negative European image of Israel. The truth is, Israel has enjoyed control over media perceptions of its illegal occupation practices for decades and has a powerful arsenal of weapons with which to turn down the volume of and deflect attention away from those who bring attention to them. Perhaps the decision made by the EU commission of Jerusalem to release the report is an indication that Israel’s impunity is beginning to wane, and its previous strategies of silencing voices of conscience are no longer as effective.
|Sheikh Jarrah, East Jerusalem||David Shulman - Last Friday we were here, Eileen and I, in this very courtyard, before the court ruling; we spoke at some length with the eloquent, moderate father of the al-Kurd family, who told us the story in gentle Arabic. He had told it many times that day. "We were refugees from Haifa in 1948. Everyone in this neighborhood is a refugee, some from Lydda and Ramla, some from Jaffa. After the 1948 war, the Jordanian government gave us these plots of land to build on, in exchange for our UNRWA cards. The cards were worth a lot of money, but we wanted to live normal lives in our own houses, so we gave up our status as refugees. We have lived in this home since the 1950`s. ||9/12/2009|
