|ISRAELI SETTLEMENT IN PALESTINIAN COMMUNITIES IN EAST JERUSALEM. SNAPSHOT, AUGUST 2009||Ir Amim - "Recent months have seen the acceleration of the process of Israeli settlement in Palestinian communities in East Jerusalem. These settlements create a crescent of Jewish population along the ridges surrounding the Old City, and implant Jewish population in the midst of the Muslim and Christian Quarters, as well as in Silwan and Sheikh Jarrah – precisely in the areas of most intense dispute in the Palestinian / Israeli conflict"||31/8/2009|
|Freeze in Jerusalem too||Akiva Eldar - Haaretz - "We think that if we say `united Jerusalem, the capital of Israel` frequently enough, the world will get used to the fact that this territory is ours [...] It has not happened yet, and that is a good thing"||31/8/2009|
|Palestinian Shops in Jerusalem’s Old City Close in Protest of Israeli Harassment ||AIC - "In recent weeks, municipal authorities have begun enforcing a law barring businesses from displaying goods on tables and racks in front of their stores, entering shops to harass business owners and issuing fines in excess of 1,000 NIS"||24/8/2009|

|Jerusalem families waiting for US action||Marcey Gayer -
The dispossession of the Hanoun and Gawi families is a clear act of defiance directed at the Obama administration`s call to freeze settlements. If it succeeds, this will be a green light for Israel to continue with its ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in East Jerusalem.
|Rabbis for Human Rights Director about his arrest at Sheikh Jarakh||Arik Asherman-
A number of officers quickly surrounded me, some pulling me by the arms and others pushing me from behind...They said that the moment that we had begun to move we were holding an unauthorized march and that I was inciting people to participate in an illegal activity. I laid down on the sidewalk... Many tactics were used to draw out my arrest and incarceration for 22.5 hours
...in all these 14 years I have never seen collusion between police and settlers like we have seen from the “Shalem” police station in Silwan over the last two years (Where Palestinians know that if they complain about being attacked by Israelis, they will be the ones arrested), and now in Sheikh Jarakh.
|MKs` Sheikh Jarrah visit sparks clashes||Abe Selig/Saed Bannoura - Jerusalem Post/IMEMC -
Not much has changed since Maher Hanoun and his family were evicted from their home in the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah last week, but the 51-year-old father of three continues to hold a 24-hour-a-day vigil across the street from his previous home (...) Hours after Hanoun spoke to the Post, MKs Ya`acov Katz and Uri Ariel (National Union), came to visit.||11/8/2009|

|Split personalities|| Sayed Kashua -
This week I was seized with a burning political fury. The kind of fury I didn`t think I still had in me. An overpowering need to take action coursed through my veins. I could not just sit by in the face of the eviction of the two Arab families from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah to make way for settlers. .."We`re leaving the city," he announced to me as I shook his hand."What?" I asked, surprised. Only six months ago he`d realized his dream and bought an apartment in a great neighborhood in West Jerusalem. "Where are you going?""Home," he answered. "That`s it, we`re going back to the Galilee. We`re not staying in this stinkin` town one more minute."||7/8/2009|
|Taking over Jerusalem : Evictions in Sheikh Jarrah and other Palestinian areas are part of a bid to turn East Jerusalem into a unified Jewish Jerusalem||Matt Kennard - The Guardian - The next stop in this attempt to cleanse the putative future capital of Palestine of its indigenous population is the Bustan area of Silwan which sits in the valley down from the Dome of the Rock and the Western Wall. When I first arrived in Israel I went on the City of David tour, which functions as a three-hour Israeli propaganda extravaganza (dressed up as an archeological experience). King David in Biblical lore is said to have been the first Jewish leader to settle the land in Jerusalem and his son King Solomon is said to have built the First Temple in 960 BC.
|From Sheikh Jarrah to Sheikh Munis ||Gideon Levy - Haaretz - We should perhaps thank the court for its scandalous ruling, which not only sparked a justifiable international wave of protest against Israel, but also revealed its true face. "There are judges in Jerusalem," as Menachem Begin said, and they have made it official: apartheid. Ownership rights are for Jews alone.
|Israel`s `Hamas`||Jeremiah Haber - The Magnes Zionist - Attorney Yael Azoulay, of Zeev and Naomi Weil Lawyers and Notary Office, explains that if a foreign national purchases an apartment they must show the ILA proof of eligibility to immigrate to Israel in accordance with the Law of Return. Non-Jewish foreigners cannot purchase apartments. This group includes Palestinians from the east of the city, who have Israeli identity cards but are residents rather than citizens of Israel.||6/8/2009|
|A third uprising? ||Gary M. Burge - The Electronic Intifada - ....this is economic strangulation. The Palestinian villages of Jerusalem and the rest of the West Bank are quietly having the life strangled out of them. In many, the water comes on only once per week. In the village of Beit Jala, it came on once in June. And Palestinians are forbidden by law to dig wells into the aquifer while at the same time enormous machines pump massive amounts of water from the same aquifer to feed the Israeli settlements. If you get behind the scenes, the frustration in these villages is boiling over.
|Israel must allow evicted Arab families to return home ||Editorial -
"The sight of the evicted Palestinian families, who had lived in these houses for decades, paints Israel in the world`s eyes as a country that maintains a cruel regime of occupation, oppresses the weak and strives to create political facts in the disputed city under the guise of the "rule of law.""
