The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil,    but because of the people who don't do anything about it

The Occupied West Bank Latroun Villages (the story of the ` 67 ethnic cleansing)Stephen Lendman - Countercurrents - No easy solutions exist. None are proposed, nor will there be any from the top down. With their growing grassroots support, it`s for committed Palestinians to achieve their long-denied equity, justice and self-determination. That`s how change always comes [concluding words of a documented report, including soldiers` testimonies]. 29/12/2009
An airport - on the way to independence Ma’an (Ramallah) - The Palestinian Authority Cabinet, after being presented with a feasibility study, decided that the international airport for the West Bank would be at a location between Jerusalem and the Jordan Valley. Airport construction is one of the elements in PM Fayyad`s plan to have all necessary state institutions in Palestine ready towards the declaration of a state in 16 months. 29/12/2009
Bil`in village stormed and two boys arrestedIyad Burnat - At 2am the IDF came with jeeps and 50 soldiers on foot - to abduct Hamouda Imad Yassin (16) and Ibrahim Khalil Yassin (16) one month since the two were released from a five months prison term. Just the latest in a series of raids and arrests to stop the weekly demonstrations in Bil’in.29/12/2009
One Palestinian family`s story illustrates the absurdity, and intention, of Israeli policy Mohammad Alsaafin - Palestine News Network - As a foreign journalist with a British passport, my dad frequently traveled between the West Bank, Gaza and inside the Green Line, and my mother and siblings would join him from Ramallah. But that all changed this August. He was arrested and had his press credentials revoked. He was told his British passport was worthless, because they discovered he had had been born and raised in a refugee camp in Gaza - among other things this is separating him from his family. [Just one of the absurdities in a long saga. ed]27/12/2009

For Palestinians, possession of used IDF arms is now a crime Amira Hass - Haaretz - In addition to charges of incitement and throwing stones, Abu Rahma was charged with illegal weapons possession due to his alleged possession of M16 rifle bullets and gas and concussion grenades - which, the indictment said, "the accused and his associates used for an exhibition that showed people the means used by the security forces." Abu Rahma`s associates confirmed that empty concussion and gas grenades used by the IDF to disperse demonstrators were exhibited in Bil`in, adding that no one tried to conceal the nature of the exhibition. However, they said, M16 bullets were not part of the exhibit, nor were they found in a search of Abu Rahma`s home. 24/12/2009

Palestinian children suffer from a lack of appropriate TV programmingDaoud Kuttab - Common Ground News - But although Palestinian families spend many hours a day glued to their TV sets, original Palestinian children’s programming is almost non-existent. Instead, hours of dubbed Japanese and other types of cartoons fill the airwaves, especially in key children’s viewing hours. Such dubbed programming usually falls into one of three potentially disadvantageous categories; it is dubbed into classical Arabic (in order to ensure sales in all 23 Arab countries), it consists of imported programming with violent content, or it revolves around religious themes. 24/12/2009
Vaccinating Gaza Gaza Gateway - Not only has the closure of Gaza failed to protect it from the virus, but the restrictions on the passage of equipment and fuel are making it difficult to contain the virus`s spread. During the military operation last winter, 15 hospitals and 34 medical institutions were damaged, and their repair has not been possible due to Israel`s refusal to allow building materials into the Gaza Strip. While Israel boasts of permitting increased quantities of humanitarian aid to Gaza, it continues to restrict the entrance of medical supplies, claiming security risks. Thus, Israel is making it difficult to send batteries needed for the UPS systems that protect sensitive hospital equipment during the frequent power outages and is limiting the supply of additional medical supplies, such as X-ray equipment. 24/12/2009

Rab’a Belal is the widow of Sheikh Said Belal, one of the Hamas founders, who died five years ago. Her five sons are already in detention, as are a grandson and a daughter-in-law. Captives (Letter from Gaza)Lawrence Wright - www.newyorker.com - Observation balloons hover just outside Gaza, and pilotless drones freely cross its airspace. However, 760 Gazan prisoners have been denied family visits for more than 30 months, and especially those held in desert prisons suffer greatly from the winter cold. Prison authorities further imposed limits on the number of clothing which West Bank prisoners, who do get family visits, can receive - so as to prevent them from sharing winter clothing with their Gazan fellows. 12/12/2009

With the Little Beggars of Qalandiya CheckpointAya Kaniuk - Mahsanmilim - Any time I see Hussam my heart leaps. He was five years old when I saw him for the first time selling stuff at Qalandiya Checkpoint. Back then he already had a different, wide open heart, unusually wide for such a small child. Since then, for these past eight years, and even before really, every single day of his life, from the moment school is out until the late evening hours, he is out selling his miserable goods, beaten and persecuted by both his own family and the various forces of the Israeli Occupation. The single day in which he did not work all these years was when he lay in a Ramallah hospital, after policemen had beaten him unconscious at the French Hill Junction. 2/12/2009

Expiration Date: The Visa Dilemma Britan Eakin - Miftah - Every exit and entry from an Israeli border brings the stress of wondering whether or not you will be found out. And if so, what will they do to you? Strip-search you? Destroy your laptop, as recently happened to a young American woman as she crossed the Taba border from Egypt into Israel? Or will they deny you entry or even worse, black list you in which case they can deny you entry for however long they see fit? This is the very worst-case scenario that plagues the minds of those of us who wish to work for justice in Palestine every time we have to cross an Israeli border. 16/12/2009
