Will the two-state UN bid make a difference on the ground?Mya Guarnieri - +972 "Many of my students support the UN bid. It feels like some sort of victory, even if it’s only on paper. Some feel it might bring some sort of change by raising international awareness of the Palestinians’ plight. My Arabic teacher who lives in East Jerusalem but is a Palestinian citizen of the state—and who holds a doctorate in Islamic Studies—said that he supported the bid because, even though there is a one-state reality on the ground, Israel will never recognize one state. The UN bid would be a step towards independence, he said. When asked about refugees and lands inside of 1948, he shrugged, “I’ve given up… [A state based on] 1967 borders is all we can hope for.” ca30/11/2012

The seven-day warAbdel-Moneim Said - Al-Ahram Weekly "When the truce was concluded, the Hamas leader lauded President Morsi in much the same way that he had praised former president Hosni Mubarak following the first Gaza war. Then, in a press conference held in Cairo, he may well have laid the seeds for the next war when he announced loud and clear that the missiles that had been fired from Gaza into Israel came from Iran, thereby eliminating the need for further proof that Iran was fighting a proxy war in Gaza as it had done in Lebanon before." ca30/11/2012

Supporting Palestine at the UN today is a vote for peace in the Middle EastHanan Ashrawi - The Guardian "is it really any surprise that we Palestinians have decided to adopt the non-violent, diplomatic and multilateral legal approach of pursuing this status at the UN, to be accorded our right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in our own country?Rather than being perceived as a substitute for negotiations, our efforts are consistent with the international community`s objective of achieving a peaceful solution whereby Palestine and Israel can live side by side in peace and security." ca 30/11/2012

Bolder Hamas Tests Alliances in a Shifting Arab WorldJODI RUDOREN and FARES AKRAM - NYT This time, Israeli forces are fighting a newly emboldened Hamas, supported by the regional powerhouses of Qatar, Turkey and Egypt, and demonstrating its strength compared with a weak and crisis-laden Palestinian Authority. After months of mostly holding its fire as it struggled to stop other militant factions from shooting rockets across the border, Hamas has responded forcefully to Israel’s killing on Wednesday of its top military commander, Ahmed al-Jabari. Gaza escalation: There was another wayDahlia Scheindlin - +972 "Just over one year ago, the Fatah leadership presented its statehood bid to the United Nations. Creativity in captivity: A Palestinian art festivalAmira Hass - MIFTAH - The biennale crosses and smudges imposed boundaries, and what better place than Qalandiyah to represent the imposition, what came before it, and what can still be its future: Qalandiyah is not just a terrifying checkpoint and an ugly separation wall; it is not just a crowded refugee camp seething with rage and poverty; it is not even just the village arbitrarily split into two in 1967, with one piece being annexed to Jerusalem and the other remaining part of the West Bank.-rh15/11/2012

Impressions of GazaNoam Chomsky - Gazans have been selected for particularly cruel punishment. It is almost miraculous that people can sustain such an existence. How they do so was described thirty years ago in an eloquent memoir by Raja Shehadeh (The Third Way), based on his work as a lawyer engaged in the hopeless task of trying to protect elementary rights within a legal system designed to ensure failure, and his personal experience as a Samid, “a steadfast one,” who watches his home turned into a prison by brutal occupiers and can do nothing but somehow “endure.”-rh 8/11/2012
A new approach to Palestinian aidNadia Hijab, Alaa Tartir, Jeremy Wildeman - Foreign Policy - Here are three things donors can consider: promoting self-reliance in basic foods and reversing the decline of the agricultural sector; supporting cooperatives and local economic enterprises; and assisting sectors such as information technology that could break through the barriers Israel has erected around the Palestinian economy. Israel is an apartheid state (no poll required)Ben White - Aljazeera - To talk about Israeli apartheid is not to suggest a precise equivalence with the policies of the historic regime in South Africa. Rather, apartheid is a crime under international law independent of any comparison (see here, here, here, and here).
