Long-awaited unity should embolden PalestiniansClovis Maksoud - Al-Monitor - In fact, unifying the Palestinian Authority and Hamas administrations into one governing entity brings with it a potentially empowering negotiating position and perhaps the possibility of deterring the creeping annexation being carried out in East Jerusalem and the rest of the West Bank. It would behoove President Mahmoud Abbas to bring the legal situation into clearer focus, as Israel has been defying international law. There will be no true negotiations unless and until Israel acknowledges that it is indeed an occupying power.-rh 30/4/2014
3 weeks in Beirut, 5 days in jail and a 90 day travel ban: The saga of journalist Majd KayyalAlex Kane and Allison Deger - Mondoweiss - Kayyal, an Israeli citizen, was thrown in a basement cell for five days after violating Israel’s ban on travel to “enemy states.” While his Jewish-Israeli colleagues routinely violate the state’s grey travel-ban to Lebanon, Kayyal was harshly punished: in addition to the imprisonment and interrogation, his parents’ houses were ransacked, and Israel’s Shin Bet successfully obtained a gag order barring locally-based media from reporting on the legal proceedings. He was placed under house arrest for a short time and is barred from traveling abroad.-rh 30/4/2014

High Court to rule whether Palestinians are denied building rightsAmira Hass - Haaretz - The state will ask the court to reject a petition, submitted in July 2011, against the 1971 military law annulling local and district planning and building committees that had existed under Jordanian law. In the place of these committees, the military law placed planning and building powers in the hands of what eventually became the Civil Administration. At the same time, special planning and building committees were established by military order for settlements only. There are currently 16 such committees. According to the petitioners, these committees received the powers and rights that had been taken from Palestinian communities. The petitioners state that the military legislation harms the Palestinians’ housing conditions and development rights. [bz]27/4/2014
