Palestinians worse off than ever as settler numbers soar, says UNAli Abunimah - Electronic Intifada - UN figures show that Israel is reaping billions of dollars in benefits from the export of goods and electricity to a captive Palestinian market. Israel bans virtually all exports from Gaza. It has repeatedly destroyed Gaza’s electricity generating capacity while preventing the construction of new plants in the West Bank, forcing Palestinians to pay exorbitant prices for Israeli-generated power. Israeli colonists, by contrast, are doing particularly well. Settlers now outnumber Palestinians in “Area C” of the occupied West Bank, the report notes. This area, so designated under the 1993 Oslo accords, makes up 61 percent of the West Bank and remains under full Israeli military control, with no role for the Palestinian Authority [bz] 3/9/2015

Wave of demolitions continues: children in al-Khdeirat community start school homelessPress release, B`Tselem, 31.8.2015 - These demolitions take part in the context of efforts by the military and the Civil Administration to push Palestinian communities out of Area C. International humanitarian law prohibits the forcible transfer of protected persons, unless carried out for their own protection or for an imperative military need. Even when the transfer meets these criteria, it must be temporary. Moreover, as the occupying power, Israel has an obligation to work for the benefit and welfare of the residents of the occupied territory. The plan to expel these residents from their homes as well as impose living conditions on some that would undermine their livelihood violates this obligation. [bz]1/9/2015
