Legitimization of land theft Haaretz Editorial - "The plan is to legitimize 42 high-rises, which are being built and which contravene the planning and construction laws... The legal counsel of Modi`in Ilit warned in writing of "construction offenses of such colossal proportions, ignoring the law and planning regulations, that words cannot describe [them]." Matityahu East is the latest in a series of such affairs in which the separation barrier, supposedly serving Israel`s security needs, is used to annex West Bank territory to expand the settlements. The defense minister is dragging his feet on everything concerning the evacuation of illegal outposts. At the same time, bodies he is responsible for - led by the civil administration - are colluding in land grabbing and legitimizing illegal construction throughout the West Bank. "27/2/2007

Mission Imperial: Life in the Green Zone (Part I)Rajiv Chandrasekaran The Guardian-"In conversation at their tables, they observed an unspoken protocol. It was always appropriate to praise "the mission" - the Bush administration`s campaign to transform Iraq into a peaceful, modern, secular democracy where everyone, regardless of sect or ethnicity, would get along. Tirades about how Saddam had ruined the country and descriptions of how you were going to resuscitate it were also fine. But unless you knew someone really, really well, you didn`t question American policy over a meal."23/2/2007

Europe and the weakened superpower: Iran, the proxy war?Michele Brand - Counterpunch - The sanctions imposed on Iran by the US are intended first and foremost to make its economy inaccessible to America`s rivals, and thus to make the US presence necessary as a gate-keeper to its development. If the US cannot succeed in "regime change" and install a friendly government in Iran, willing to privilege it over other countries in the long term, then at least it wants to make it difficult if not impossible for its rivals to establish a secure relationship with Iran. It seems ready to do this even by setting fire to the region, if it can`t get its way through sanctions.18/2/2007

Weekly Digest: Reports from Checkpoints MachsomWatch, Qalandiya, Thursday, 8.2.07, 16:15: “Shooting is back at Qalandiya. [...] The soldiers are positioned […] at the bottom of the hill of Qalandiya village, and shoot at the children positioned on the top of the hill, throwing stones. Yesterday a child was wounded! Please, we plead, leave the place and the children will not have a target to throw stones on! But the soldiers continue and so do the children.[…] the scene expands to the other side of the road, to the refugee camp. Another group of children throw stones from the houses of Qalandiya camp and the soldiers shoot rubber bullets and shock grenades into the narrow alleyway. No one stops this dangerous farce. We saw these `battles` 2.5 years ago, when the wall was under construction. 5 children were killed" 12/2/2007

Contrary to the announcements of easing of restrictions, we observed extra flying CPs and extra military presence. People were detained for approx. two hours in some cases. As to the decision of the court to take down the concrete fence along the roads, there is no sign of compliance. In spite of a written promise of the DCO not to check schoolchildren on their way to and from school in Hebron through the magnometers, for a whole year now the children have to go through the checking caravans" 5/2/2007
Who can stop the war? The US Congress has the power, but do they have the will?Alexander Cockburn - Aside from winning, there aren`t that many ways of ending wars. Governments pay attention when the troops mutiny, when there are riots outside recruiting offices, when there`s revolution on the home front, when the money runs out. 3/2/2007
Escalating threats of U.S. attacks against Iran: UFPJ Talking Points # 48Phyllis Bennis - United for Peace and Justice/Znet - The problem here in the U.S. is that among government, policy and media elites, it is taken as a matter of unchallengeable "fact" that Iran IS a threat to Israel, that all threats Israel claims are real, and that any threat to Israel is necessarily a threat to the United States. Because this view is predominant in Congress, the involvement of Israel in any way with a U.S. attack on Iran would seriously undermine Congressional opposition.20/2/2007

Weekly Digest: Reports from CheckpointsMachsomWatch -- 18.2.07, PM, Huwwara village (Nablus Area): “We are told that for the past week, the BP men no longer harass the girls. The army asked for a large Sulha (reconciliation) ceremony to be held with the girls` parents, with press coverage. The parents refused. Sulha, they explained, is held when both parties have been in the wrong. Sulha in their mind is to collaborate with the occupier. In the meantime the BP men continue to detain the young men, make them stand in a line even in the pouring rain, as the soldiers sit in their jeep, and they take IDs and make them wait”26/2/2007

Old Europe and the Mullahs Philip Giraldi - Antiwar - Knowing that to cross the Lobby is perilous, Congressmen from both parties squirm and become uneasy when pressured by AIPAC to "protect Israel," even if it means yet another unwinnable war for the United States. The neocons know full well that if a war with Iran were to be started either inadvertently or by design, few within America`s political system would be brave enough to stand up in opposition.25/2/2007
