Study: Gaza unemployment`s rate predicted to reach 50% | | Alray - Business analysts and economists raised the alarm over rising
unemployment rates in the besieged Gaza Strip amid rapidly deteriorating
economic conditions. According to Maher al-Tabaa of the Gaza Chamber of
Commerce, the present unemployment rate of 28% - which would have been
considered high in many other countries, but is relatively low by Gazan
standards - is expected to rise sharply in the next few months, and
might reach 50%. There are two main reasons for the fast economic
deterioration, following two years of relative economic stability: One
is the Egyptian Army`s closing off of most of the tunnels to Sinai, via
which the Gaza Strip used to get most of the consumer goods denied by
the Israeli siege. The other is Israel`s decision to stop construction
materials getting into the strip, following the discovery of a Hamas
cross-border tunnel. which is expected to bring construction in the
Strip to a stand-still.

So near and yet so far: Israeli seclusion of Gaza causes separation of Palestinian families | | Hamoked/B`Tselem - Couples of which one spouse is from the West Bank and
the other from the Gaza Strip are often separated and their family life
disrupted by Israel`s prohibits of all passage between the Gaza Strip
and the West Bank, except in very few exceptional humanitarian cases.
The Gazan partner would find it very difficult to come to live on the
West Bank, being classed by the Israeli military authorities as an
"illegal alien" and needing to go through a difficult beauracratic
process to get a residence permit. On the other hand, West Bank
residents who want to move to the Gaza Strip to live with their Gazan
spouses can do so easily, but only if they pledge to relocate
permanently to Gaza; they would then hardly ever be allowed to come back
to the West Bank, even for a short visit. This clearly reflects the
strategic concept current in Israeli governmental circles since the Gaza
Redeployment in 2005, envisioning an eventual annexation of the West
Bank but not of the Gaza Strip, so as to preserve the "Jewish Majority".
Hamoked and B`Tselem contend that demographic motives, unacceptable
under current standards of Human Rights, are hidden behind the official
"security" rationale. ak

Video: Kalandia - A Checkpoint Story | | "Kalandia - A Checkpoint Story" follows the evolvement of a small checkpoint in Northern Jerusalem which was established as a temporary checkpoint in 2001. Over a span of six years, Neta Efrony, a filmmaker and a member of MachsomWatch (Checkpoints Watch), documented the ways in which a temporary checkpoint grew and expanded into becoming a permanent checkpoint.
