Medical associations from around the world back demand to ensure medical treatment for Gaza’s children | | Ghada Majadle - Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI) - The
letter sent by the British Medical Association to PM Netanyahu and
Defense Minister Gantz stressed that, “In terms of health and from a
human rights perspective, Palestinians’ ability to access medical
treatment has been curtailed, causing unnecessary severe harm,
possibly death.” The European Academy of Pediatrics highlighted
figures according to which only half of the applications for medical
treatment outside the Strip were approved by the Israeli
authorities. The communication cited two tragic cases of Palestinian
babies from Gaza who died of their illness before they could make it
to the hospitals to which they were referred outside the Strip.
"Children are children. We support the right to health of Gaza’s
children and to swift, safe access to treatment in the West Bank,
East Jerusalem and Israel.” [ak] | 15/9/2020 |

Virus puts new strain on Gaza’s overwhelmed health system | | Fares Akram - AP - Dr. Ahmed el-Rabii spent years treating
Palestinians wounded by Israeli fire during wars and clashes in the
Gaza Strip. Now that the coronavirus has reached the blockaded
territory, the 37-year-old physician finds himself in the unfamiliar
role of patient.
El-Rabii is the first Gaza doctor diagnosed with COVID-19 and is
among dozens of health-care workers infected during the local
outbreak, which was detected late last month. The spread among
front-line workers has further strained an already overburdened
health-care system.
Speaking from one of the two hospitals designated to treat
coronavirus cases, el-Rabii said the threat in many ways is more
terrifying than war.
During fighting, “you only fear being hit by shrapnel by mistake,”
he said. “But with the virus, you constantly worry because you do
not know how or from where it will hit you: from a patient, from
your colleague, or by touching the elevator or any other surface.”

Malnutrition stalks Gaza | | Isra Saleh el-Namey - EI - “Malnutrition is a serious problem in Gaza, a recent
study by the World Food Programme stated. It found that 86 percent of children
under the age of 5 living near Gaza’s boundary with Israel did not have a minimal
accepted diet” [ry] | 7/9/2020 |

Deescalation Agreement reached between Israel and Hamas | | Eyal Arbid / Yoav Zitun - Y-net / IMEMC - With Egyptian and Quatari
mediation, a "Deescalation Agreement" (not described as "ceasefire")
was reached. The Israeli
communique emphasized that there would be no further launching of
balloon-borne incendiary and explosive devices from the Gaza Strip
into Israel. The Palestinians emphasized that the Kerem Shalom
border crossing would open and renewed supplies of fuel will enalbe
resumption of electric supplies in Gaza, and that the fishing zone
off the Gaza shore will be restored to its pre-escalation size of 15
miles, and also medical supplies will be allowed in to help battle
the new coronavirus outbreak. However, the essential problems of the
Israeli siege and blockade of the Strip were not addressed - which
virtually ensures new violent cycles in the future. [ak] | 1/9/2020 |
