Geneva Initiative: the Two State Coalition project goes on | | Noam Rabinovich - The Geneva Initiative - In April 2018, the Geneva
Initiative launched the Two State Coalition project – a program
aimed at institutionalizing and consolidating the efforts of the
Israeli and Palestinian peace organizations. The coalition works to
encourage and support the Israeli and Palestinian peace camps by
establishing a strong, inclusive and action-oriented coalition of
civil society organizations acting in support of the Two-State
Solution. In October, representatives of the member organizations of
both the Palestinian and Israeli coalitions met for an intensive
two-day workshop, aimed at analyzing and understanding the current
political landscape and identifying possible messages and strategies
that can influence the situation. We believe that civil society in
both Palestine and Israel has the potential to be an invaluable
force in promoting a negotiated settlement for the conflict.[ak]

We have been fined for asking Lorde to boycott Israel – but we won’t be silenced | | Nadia Abu-Shanab and Justine Sachs - The Guardian - Our letter didn’t sway the balance of forces. The slow patient work of movement-building did. Nevertheless, Israel has thrust a platform beneath our feet. This platform comes with a responsibility to demonstrate how we can and should respond to its tactics. Israel’s aim was to intimidate, but also to set the terms of the debate. Israeli sensibilities are the starting point from which things must be understood. We see this in the way Palestinians are constantly quizzed on whether they believe in Israel’s right to exist, while Palestinian existence is denied and threatened. [bz] | 23/10/2018 |

Israeli and International Activists Join Gazan Protestors in the Great Return March | | Wafa Aludini -
International Solidarity Movement -
"On the morning of October 10, 2018, ten activists from around the world delivered messages of support to the Great March of Return in the Eastern Gaza Strip via Skype, as a part of a ‘virtual rally’ entitled “Words Over Walls.”...All people of conscience, all people who have a heart, regardless of nationality or religion, must stand with the brave people of Gaza and support their demand to be free and to return to their land and homes in Palestine. The siege on Gaza must be broken and the prison walls that surround Gaza must come down. Palestine must be free,” said author Mike Peled." - id | 17/10/2018 |

The Israeli activists helping protect the Palestinian olive harvest | | Orly Noy - +972 Magazine - For the past decade and a half, dozens of
left-wing Israeli activists have come together to accompany
Palestinians to their groves during the olive harvest. Despite
recurring settler violence, the situation has improved over the
years. The coalition was formed in 2002 by 82-year-old Yaakov Manor,
a veteran Israeli human rights activist. “In 2002 we had a friend
from the village Hares who worked in the Palestinian Authority’s
District Coordination Office. We asked him to organize a tour of
several villages to see what was happening. We were 15 people,
mostly from Ta’ayush. We went into many villages, sat with heads of
local councils and farmers. Everywhere we went I wrote down the
statistics — how many acres of land hadn’t been cultivated, what
were the main problems, etc. I came home with my long list of
villages, particularly ones located next to settlements. I counted
something like 22,240 acres of land that had not been cultivated due
to settler violence. In 2002, all the radical groups worked together
to organize a large harvest. More than 200 people came, and we
divided the volunteers into groups. Eerywhere we went, soldiers
tried to block our way. They really waited for us, but we were able
to circumvent them. From that day, we decided to do it every year.”

States can’t punish businesses for boycotting Israel, federal judge in Arizona says | | Isaac Stanley-Becker - The Washington Post - U.S. District Judge
Diane Humetewa issued an injunction blocking enforcement of an
Arizona state law which compels any business contracting with the
state to submit a written pledge that it was not involved in boycott
activity targeting Israel. The appeal was lodged by Jordahl, a
lawyer involved in Jewish Voice for Peace, who asserted that the law
infringed his First Amendment right to Freedom of Speech. The
ruling was the second this year to turn back a wave of state
legislation against boycott of Israel. The first was in January, when a federal judge in
Kansas ruled that forcing contractors to sign a no-boycott certification violated
"expressive rights guaranteed under the First Amendment." [ak] | 2/10/2018 |
