The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil,    but because of the people who don't do anything about it

Settlements in Focus : Hebron in the HeadlinesLara Friedman, Dror Etkes - Peace Now - "On March 19, 2007, in a move that seemed to surprise everyone – including, according to some press reports, Israeli security and intelligence officials – several hundred settlers took over a massive building in the heart of the city of Hebron. They immediately named their new stronghold “Beit HaShalom” ("House of Peace"), while the press nicknamed the structure “Beit HaMeriva” (“House of Contention”). The takeover of the site has sparked controversy over the legality of the purchase itself, the legality of the purchase under Israeli law as it pertains to the activities of Israelis in the West Bank, and the proper role of the government in confronting this clear challenge by the settlers." 25/4/2007

Settlements in a nutshellAkiva Eldar - Haaretz - "The Israel Defense Forces commanders in the West Bank heard on the radio that in the ongoing struggle between the settlers and the rule of the law, the minister closest to the prime minister is on the settlers` side; Civil Administration officers heard that a senior MK from the ruling party prefers that they look the other way when the hilltop youth plant a stake for another outpost... This is story of the settlements in a nutshell. That is how for 40 years there has been cooperation between the political, military and legal leadership, for the glory of the state of the settlers."17/4/2007
An ominous house of contention Talia Sasson - Ha`aretz - As far as is known, no one is claiming that the defense minister and the head of the civil administration approved the purchase of the [Hebron] house. Since the required permit was not presented to the army, the Israel Defense Forces had an obligation to prevent the entry of the settlers before it took place. Certainly the defense minister and the prime minister should have announced the intention of evicting the settlers at once, as soon as they became aware of the situation, and issued orders for their eviction and held a hearing without delay, without waiting for about 20 days before a political decision.14/4/2007
AG: Settlers can petition court against Hebron house eviction Eli Ashkenazi and Amos Harel - Haaretz - "Attorney General Menachem Mazuz said Wednesday that the disputed building in the West Bank city of Hebron could not be evacuated immediately. The attorney general said that during a debate on the matter Tuesday at his office, he had approved a process of evacuation according to which the settlers would be able to petition the High Court of Justice against the eviction." 12/4/2007
Peretz: settlers who moved into the Hebron four-story building to be removedTovah Lazaroff - Jerusalem Post - In March, the IDF provided security for the entry of the settlers to the structure, located in an area populated by Palestinians. Still, Peretz said on Thursday the settlers` presence was unauthorized because they had not sought permission from his office to enter the building [and that] government policy should not be determined by the settlers` purchasing a building, but rather that "it is the government`s policy that should determine the purchasing." 6/4/2007
Construction of Israeli settlement under way in Jordan ValleyJamil al-Husni - International Solidariy Movement - "Announcement of the new settlement construction aroused reactions of rejection from the U.S. administration, the European Union and Arab countries. All consider such building a violation of Road Map agreements. Under the “Road Map” peace plan, Israel pledged to freeze all settlement expansion, while the Palestinian Authority promised to crack down on armed groups." 4/4/2007
