Boston Globe article on water partnership gets the story wrong in Massachusetts and Israel/PalestineJoel Wool - Mondoweiss "The Globe paints a serene image of Yatir, depicting a lush green expanse “[o]n the chalky lower slopes of the Hebron Hills, in the midst of the scorched Israeli desert” and linking to a Jewish National Fund Sustainable Development page. The Jewish name for the community, and the forest planted in 1964, comes from the Old Testament—Jattir, a city in hill country. Then, in 2011, the Israeli National Council for Planning and Building releases a new plan for the Yatir Forest area. Five hundred Bedouin will be displaced to make way for a recreational park. ISRAELI WAR PROFITEERING IN AFRICA: Following The MoneyTerry Crawford-Browne--One is familiar with the “criminal underworld” of thieves, gangs, drug lords, the Italian Mafia, and other manifestations of organised crime. More serious is the “criminal overworld” of corrupt politicians, corrupt bankers, corrupt lawyers -- in other words the world’s elites. Historically, this is not a new phenomenon. In recent years however, it has become more pervasive and blatant in which privileged members of society fleece the public, evade taxation and lobby vigorously for even greater benefits. dn 17/11/2013

The Life and Death of Juliano Mer-KhamisAdam Shatz--On the afternoon of Saturday, 4 April 2011, Juliano Mer-Khamis walked out of the Freedom Theatre in the Jenin refugee camp and got into his old red Citroën. It was four o’clock, the sun was hot and the street crowded. He put his baby son, Jay, on his lap, placing the boy’s fingers on the steering wheel; the babysitter sat next to them. As he set off, a man in a balaclava came out of an alleyway and told him to stop. He had a gun. The babysitter told Juliano to keep driving, but he stopped. The gunman shot him five times, then walked back down the alley. He left his mask in the street. Jay survived; the babysitter escaped with minor injuries. When Israeli soldiers arrived, less than thirty minutes later, Juliano was dead. They took his body to Israel, along with his car, computer, wallet and other effects.dn16/11/2013

EU’s wary support for PalestineLaurence Bernard - Le Monde Diplomatique "The situation in the Middle East demonstrates the EU’s inability to impose conditions as a basis for a lasting peace in the region. Yet it could easily do so (5). It could accept the important step that its recent directive represents, instead of trying to limit its effectiveness, and refuse to bow to pressure from Israel — which has banned EU representatives from visiting Gaza — and the US. Europe is Israel’s biggest trading partner — trade with the EU is worth nearly €30bn ($41bn) a year — and accounts for a quarter of its exports. The EU could threaten reprisals under the EU-Israel Association Agreement, signed in 2000, freeze specific accords that are already in force or being negotiated (Israel is still the main beneficiary of the EU’s Mediterranean programmes), and suspend negotiations on strengthening the Association Agreement." ca15/11/2013

UNDER THE FORESTS - A satiric piece full of wishful thinking Rafi Shtendel Chairperson, New KKL -JNF November 2013 "The title refers to AB Yehoshua’s novella, “Facing the Forests” (1), which I somehow only got around to reading a couple of weeks ago. Ever since then, I can’t stop thinking about it and about what the Jewish National Fund (JNF – KKL) – the organization I’m heading – is doing with these forests. It is so sad that in the story, only after the Arab worker burns the JNF forest, it exposes what’s buried beneath it. Why must it be that way? Why not simply acknowledge what we’ve done, destroyed and covered up? Yehoshua has his worker’s tongue cut off, but ours is intact and we must use it to say out loud: Sixty-five years ago there was an entire culture here that we have destroyed to establish a Jewish State, whose ruins are covered by KKL forests." ca8/11/2013
