“Internal revolt” at Oxfam over Scarlett Johansson affair, insider saysAli Abunimah - electronicintifada.net - The Johansson affair “has really brought out one of the thorniest issues within Oxfam,” an insider said. Although Oxfam has done a lot of lobbying both publicly and privately on the issue of Israeli settlements, it has faced intense resistance from Oxfam America. The situation became much worse after Matt Herrick, spokesperson for Oxfam America, told The New York Times’ blog The Lede last week that Oxfam had not even asked Johansson to end her deal with SodaStream. The Palestinian NGO Network (PNGO) has written to Oxfam calling on it to sever its ties to Johansson. PNGO includes virtually all of Oxfam’s Palestinian partners. Palestine’s Boycott National Committee issued a public statement making the same demand today. bz 28/1/2014

Erekat: PA won`t negotiate with Israel past the agreed upon 9 monthsMa`an - The London-based al-Hayat newspaper quoted western sources as saying that that Secretray of State Kerry had started to consult the Palestinian Authority and Israel over a possible extension of the time frame for negotiations, past the April 2014 deadline and ntil the end of 2014. In reposnse, Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat said that there had been no request for The Palestinian Authority to extend negotiations time, and that any such idea would be rejected. shall we agree on any temporary solutions. We resumed negotiations under clearly defined terms about the final status and within a nine-month time frame."We will not agree on an extension even for one day, nor shall we agree on any temporary solutions". The PA remains committed to continuing the negotiatiations until the April 2014. In practice, however, there have been no direct meetings between Israelis and Palestinians since the Palestinian negotiating team resigned, in protest against continued Israeli settlement construction. Kerry runs into trouble, seeks extension of Palestinian-Israeli talksThe Middle East Monitor - The London-based Arabic newspaper Al-Hayat predicted the failure of Kerry`s framework deal because it is being refused by both the Palestinian and the Israeli sides.Netanyahu has reportedly objected to most items mentioned in the proposed plan, including land awps on a one to one ratio and allowing the establishment of a Palestinian capital in East Jerusalem. Netanyahu demanded to annex 13 per cent of the West Bank in exchange for a land swap of only three to four per cent of Israeli land and monetray payment for the rest - which was unacceptable to the Palestinians. They also objected to having a Palestinain capital in only "selected parts" of East Jerusalem. Other contested points included Netanyahu opposing Kerry`s suggestion to set up a combined team of Palestinian, Israeli, American and Jordanian security forces along the borders of the Jordan Valley, and he refused the return of any Palestinians refugees. For their part, the Palestinians rejected the return of only a limited number of refugees. reportedly, following a strmy meeting with Israeli PM Netanyahu, US Secretray of State Kerry has postponed indefintely his next visit to the region, originally scheduled for January 13, and is now trying to extend Israeli-Palestinian negotiations beyond the stipulated April 2014 deadline. 21/1/2014

Ariel Sharon obituary Lawrence Joffe - The Guardian - Both as general and statesman, Sharon acted like a bulldozer. Critics held him responsible for miring Israel in Lebanon from 1982 to 2000, when some 1,200 Israeli soldiers and 17,000 Lebanese died. Many also blamed him for sabotaging the 1993 Oslo peace process. On 28 September 2000 he visited Jerusalem`s Temple Mount with a "message of peace" and 1,000 armed police. If it was a calculated move, it paid off. His presence prompted a full-blown Palestinian uprising, and allowed him to gain national leadership four months later by posing as Israel`s saviour.
