Gulf officials warn Israel against forming gov`t with far-right candidates: report | | i24NEWS - Officials from Gulf states have warned Israel that a coalition consisting of far-right figures could hamper diplomatic efforts between Jerusalem and the Arab world. (...) “A right-wing policy is one thing,” the officials were quoted as saying. “But expressions against Muslims and Arabs by Members of Knesset [Israel Parliament] that are a part of [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s government will harm and sabotage the normalization between Israel and Arab countries.” [ak] | 25/3/2021 |

Former top Saudi adviser: No Israel normalization before Palestinian statehood | | Stuart Winer - Times of Israel - A former senior adviser to the
Saudi Arabian government said that the kingdom would not normalize
ties with Israel until a peace agreement establishes an independent
Palestinian state. Nawaf Obaid’s editorial, published in the
Palestinian Al Quds newspaper one day before Israelis go to the
polls, was seen by analysts as an open message to Israel after PM
Netanyahu recently indicated that Riyadh is on its way to
normalizing relations with Israel. Obaid, who said the views he was
expressing were those held by the kingdom’s de facto ruler Crown
Prince Mohammad Bin Salman, asserted that Saudi Arabia would see
normalization as a way to pressure Israel on behalf of the
Palestinians and that current Israeli policies showed it was
therefore not an option. [ak] | 25/3/2021 |

Netanyahu banned from top law enforcement appointments - High Court | | TAMAR BEERI - Jerusalem Post - At the heart of the discussion of the High Court was the statement made in November by Attorney-General Avichai Mandelblit, who claimed that due to the current conflict of interests surrounding Netanyahu`s indictment for bribery, fraud and breach of trust, he should not be permitted to interfere in certain decisions concerning the law enforcement system, the courts, the affairs of witnesses and other defendants in his trial.
According to Mandelblit at the time, he should also not engage in certain areas of activity within the Communications Ministry, as well as certain governmental legislative proceedings which directly affect the criminal proceedings in his case. [bz] | 25/3/2021 |

UAE suspends Abu Dhabi summit over Netanyahu’s electioneering | | Al Jazeerah - The summit scheduled for April was supposed to be attended by Netanyahu, a US official from the Biden administration, and leaders from other Arab states that have normalised relations with Israel. Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, known as MBZ, was reported to be “outraged” at what he regards as Netanyahu “exploiting the normalisation deal with Israel as a part of his election campaign”.
In a tweet on Wednesday, Emirati former Foreign Minister Anwar Gargash explained: “From the UAE’s perspective, the purpose of the Abrahamic Accords is to provide a robust strategic foundation to foster peace and prosperity with the State of Israel [and not with a specific politician] and in the wider region,” rather than interfering in internal elections, now or ever. A proposal for `resetting relations with the Palestinians` discussed in the Biden Administration | | The National News (Abu Dhabi) - A memo drafted by Hady Amr, Deputy
Assistant Secretary of State for Israeli-Palestinian affairs and
presented to Secretary Blinken, recommends `resetting` relations
with the Palestinians, who are moving towards holding their first
general elections in 15 years. The memo recommends re-establishing
contact with the Palestinian Authority which was cut under Trump,
who shut the US consulate in Jerusalem and kicked Palestinian diplomats out of the US. Noting that Trump`s
peace plan ignored key Palestinian concerns such as East Jerusalem
becoming the capital of a Palestinian state, the memo recommends
that the present administration re-commit the US to achieving
Israeli-Palestinian peace under a two-state solution framework
“based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed land swaps and
agreements on security and refugees", reopen a US mission in the
Palestinian territories to signal a commitment to the two-state
solution, resuming a full range of economic, security and
humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians, including aid to
UNRWA.)US financial aid to the PA and to UNRWA, and reversing
Trump`s agreement to label settlement products entering the US as
"Made in Israel". An immediate first step, to be announced later
this month or in early April, is a $15 million in Covid-related
humanitarian assistance to the Palestinians. [ak] | 18/3/2021 |

Mourid Barghouti, a giant of plain words | | Ahmed Masoud - Electronic Intifada - Thirty years after his exile began, Barghouti went back to Ramallah for the first time in 1996.
It was the era of the Oslo accords between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization. Numerous commentators were talking about peace in the Middle East yet Barghouti was under no illusions.
In `I Saw Ramallah`, he writes: “The others are still masters of the place. They give you a permit. They check your papers. They start files on you. They make you wait.” [bz] | 11/3/2021 |

Netanyahu and Lapid reportedly sabotage each other`s meetings with Arab Princes | | Y-Net/World Israeli News - Twelve days ahead of the crucial Israeli
general elections, the campaigns of both PM Netanyahu and opposition
leader Lapid reportedly extend to involve Arab Monarchies and their
Crown Princes. This morning, Jordan’s Crown Prince Hussein was due
to visit Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem, but was turned back at
the Allenby Bridge by the Israeli military authorities. The official
reason was that he had with him "too many armed bodyguards". But it
is rumored that this was just a pretext, the real reason being
that he intended to meet Opposition Leader Lapid. In an apparent
retaliation, Jordan refused to allow the plane of PM Netanyahu to
cross Jordanian airspace, to meet with Abu Dhabi’s Crown Prince
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and possibly also the Saudi
Crown Prince Muhammad Ben Salman. The rumors here tell of Lapid and
former PM Ehud Barak having pushed the Jordanian King Abdullah to
take this step. [ak] | 11/3/2021 |

Defense Minister Ganz: Hundreds of Israelis may face prosecution at the International Criminal Court | | Yonah Jeremy Bob - Jerusalem Post/Reuters - International Criminal
Court Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda is opening a full war crimes probe
against Israel and Hamas. "The decision followed a painstaking
preliminary examination undertaken by my office, lasting close to
five years. Our central concern must be for the victims of crimes,
both Palestinian and Israeli, arising from the long cycle of
violence and insecurity that has caused deep suffering and despair
on all sides. My office will take the same principled, non-partisan,
approach that it has adopted in previous cases." The Government of
Israel voiced vehement protest, frustrated in its hope that Bensouda
- soon to end her term as ICC prosecutor - would leave the decision
to her successor and that he could be persuaded to stop the
investigation. Defense Minister and Acting Justice Minister Benny
Gantz alarmed government officials when he warned that hundreds of
Israelis could be subject – in the near future – to war crimes
probes by the International Criminal Court. Gantz called that “an
estimate,” declining to say that Israel had drawn up a list of
officials likely to be investigated.[ak] | 3/3/2021 |
