Basques tell train maker to withdraw from Israel’s apartheid railway | | Ali Abunimah -
Electronic Intifada
"The groups say that the railway “entrenches Israeli apartheid” and
demand that CAF “comply with international law, withdraw from the
Jerusalem tram project and thus end complicity in the occupation of
Palestine.” The $2 billion expansion project is an essential part of
Israel’s effort to consolidate its grip on its colonial settlements
around Jerusalem and is viewed by Palestinians as a symbol of their
occupation and oppression." ca | 28/2/2020 |

European ex-prime ministers condemn Trump plan as apartheid | | Ali Abunimah -
Electronic Intifada
"In a letter published by The Guardian on Thursday, they say the so-
called Deal of the Century violates numerous UN resolutions and “the
most fundamental principles of international law.”
“The map featured in the plan proposes Palestinian enclaves under
permanent Israeli military control, which evoke chilling
associations with South Africa’s bantustans,” the leaders add.
Bantustans were a series of impoverished reservations where South
Africa’s white supremacist government tried to force millions of
Black people to live." ca | 28/2/2020 |

Despite attempt to change rules with Syria strikes, Israel’s Gaza policy failing | | Avi Issacharoff - Times of Israel - The IDF officer who decided to
take extreme action to collect a body as "a bargaining chip" likely
didn’t realize that footage of the body on the bulldozer blade being
spread all over social media would lead to dozens of rockets being
fired at Israel.(...) The main Israeli response was far away, on the
Syrian front, where many Islamic Jihad targets near Damascus were
hit - a surprising step, designed to make PIJ decision-makers "think
twice and thrice before attempting another attack". The military and
the government are trying to set up a new equation by which
escalation with Israel will hurt not only Gaza but also PIJ leaders
in Syria, who have thus far enjoyed a degree of immunity from
Israeli strikes. However, even by its own standard, PIJ went
overboard with its response of extensive launching of rockets.(...)
Hamas stayed on the sidelines, neither participating in the
launching of rockets nor restraining the PIJ. The Israeli policy is
clearly not working. [ak] | 25/2/2020 |

Why are American Jews so afraid of one of their own? | | Joshua Leifer -
+972
"What makes Sanders different from other American politicians when
it comes to Israel-Palestine — and one of the reasons he has come
under such ferocious attack from the organized Jewish community — is
that he openly supports “Palestinian freedom and independence,” as
he wrote earlier this year in Jewish Currents. And unlike most other
self-described two-state proponents, Sanders has actually called for
measures that would put pressure on Israel to stop settlement
construction and its human rights abuses in Gaza." ca | 24/2/2020 |

Profiting from loss: how business in illegal Israeli settlements continues unchecked | | Jonathan Cook - The UN is not taking any meaningful action against the 112 companies that condoned, through their commercial activities, Israel’s land and resource theft from Palestinians.
The Israeli media is full of stories of how the JNF actively assists extremist settler groups in evicting Palestinians from homes in East Jerusalem. But Britain and other states are blocking legal efforts to challenge the JNF’s special status.
Soon, it seems, Europe will no longer have to worry about its hypocrisy being so visible. Once the settlements have been annexed, as the Trump administration intends, the EU can set aside its ineffectual agonising and treat the settlements as irrevocably Israeli – just as it has done in practice with the Israeli “neighbourhoods” of occupied East Jerusalem.
Then, the UN’s list of shame can join decades’ worth of condemnatory resolutions that have been quietly gathering dust. [bz] | 18/2/2020 |

Breaking with Washington: Arabs and Muslims Must Take a United Stance for Palestine | | Ramzy Baroud - CounterPunch - "A negotiated solution to the ‘Palestinian-Israeli
conflict’, at least the way envisaged by successive US administrations, has failed.
Now, Palestinians and their allies would have to explore a whole new path of
liberation that does not go through Washington" [ry] | 17/2/2020 |

Why the Left won`t tolerate liberal Zionists - as seen by a non-liberal | | Jonathan S. Tobin - JNS.org/IsraelHayom - It is curious that the Columbia Journalism Review would consider Zonszein, whose work has regularly appeared in far-left anti-Israel publications like Jewish Currents, +972mag and The Nation, to be qualified to comment in their august pages on any subject, let alone a Jewish one. (...) From the point of view of pro-Israel opinion, does any of this matter? Does anyone really care if the far-left thinks a liberal paper isn`t left-wing enough to suit the tastes of radicals? It does matter. For two reasons.
One is that while The Forward has often been deeply and often unfairly critical of Israel, if the center of gravity in the liberal Jewish world has come this far to the left, then American Jewry is in deeper trouble than many of us had thought. [bz] | 11/2/2020 |

Do Palestinians need a UNSC vote for their PR battle against the US? | | Tovah Lazaroff - Jerusalem Post - The picture of an isolated US, when it comes to a major diplomatic initiative by President Donald Trump, would be the best possible PA response to a peace plan that did not include the authority in the formation of its text and which it feels does not reflect its basic redline needs for a viable state.
The best-case scenario for Washington and Jerusalem is for the PA to lack the support of nine member states needed for the approval of any resolution. [ak] | 11/2/2020 |

Trump`s plan for a failed Palestinian state | | Sever Plocker - Ynet - The plan poses as much of a danger to Israeli interests as it does to those of the Palestinians who will be left in a tiny enclave cut off from the world and expected to achieve peace and prosperity. Some common sense of a senior mainstream daily`s commentator. [bz] | 11/2/2020 |

Why | | Gush Shalom - At the village of Qaddum an Israeli soldier shot to the head of a 14-year old boy.

Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz Likely to Vote Against Trump Plan | | Dov Benovadia - Hamodia - PM Netanyahu had planned to bring the
entire Trump plan to a Cabinet vote this week – but is unlikely to
do so, at least for now, because Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz has
made it clear that he will vote against it. According to the well-
informed commentator Shalom Yerushalmi, Katz is planning to compete
for the Likud leadership in the event of Netanyahu having to strp
down, and in primaries held among the Likud party membership Katz
would face a severe handicap if having run "with the stain of haing
supported a Palestinian state" - despite the fact that the
Palestinian state envisaged in the Trump Plan is a joke.[ak] | 4/2/2020 |
