RAMALLAH (Ma`an) -- A combined payment of €11.5 million will see over 56,400 Palestinian families in need receive their social assistance benefits, the European Union announced on Thursday.

The payment, in the past three years totally funded by the EU, was one of the first jointly funded initiatives.

Palestinian Minister for Social Affairs Majeda Al Masri said in a statement that the payment was `part of the Ministry`s efforts to curb poverty and reach-out to the neediest and most vulnerable Palestinian households in the West Bank and Gaza.`

She thanked the EU for their financial aid that made the payment possible, as well as the logistical assistance in getting the support to families.

The social assistance benefits see the most in need Palestinian families given approximately $200 every three months.

Payments are made over-the-counter at 47 branches of Bank of Palestine and Cairo Amman Bank. Beneficiaries may collect their allowances from 18 December 2010 to 13 January 2011, at the bank branch indicated by their social worker.
