JERUSALEM (Ma’an) -- Israeli police extended by one day the detention of Ayman Al-Ghawi, 19, from the East Jerusalem of Shiekh Jarrah, his family reported Thursday.

Al-Ghawi was detained while he was with his mother in the nearby Wadi Aj-Joz neighborhood after an Israeli settler living in the occupied area filed a complaint against the boy, when he hit the settler`s dog with his backpack.

Maysoon, Ayman’s mother, accused the settler of intentionally releasing his dog on her son as they passed by the man`s home. When the dog approached, she said Ayman used took off his backpack and used it as a shield, pushing the dog away with force. The dog retreated back to its home.

The two continued on their way, when a police car appeared and stopped them in the street, Maysoon said. At that point she explained that Ayman was detained.

`Should he just stand there while the dog bites him?` she asked.
