Palestinians from South Hebron Hill still targeted by settlers: a well poisoned and two road block in the same day
Operation Dove
PRESS RELEASE
19.8.2013

A group of settlers from the area poisoned a well and blocked the road to Bir al Idd Palestinian village, nearby Mitzpe Yair Israeli outpost. The road is one of the main ways of access for Palestinians to the Masafer Yatta area, whose inhabitants are threatened of eviction by the Israeli army

On August 18 Israeli settlers poisoned a well in the Palestinian village of Bir al Idd. In the morning, the inhabitants of the village discovered that the water into a well of the village was dirty and had a bad smell, as it was poisoned.

On the same day settlers from the area made two road blocks on the only way of access to the village. The gravel road has been closed during the day for more than six hours in total.

On the morning the inhabitants of Bir al Idd found a road block made of stones and tires. The stones were on the road for about 100 meters. At about 4 pm the Israeli soldiers opened the road, after at least five hours of blockage.

At 6:25 pm eight settlers came back to the same road and started to bring stones and tires in order to rebuild the road block. Meanwhile, six Palestinians who were leaving the village had to stop with their two cars because of the settlers` presence on the road. Since the beginning, there was a DCO car staying on the road about 50 meters away from the scene. At about 6:50 pm an army vehicle arrived. Neither the DCO officers nor the soldiers did anything to stop the settlers. At 7 pm a police car arrived and three policeman forced three settlers to follow them to the car, while some other settlers kept working on the road. Slowly all the settlers stopped moving stones and went away towards Mitzpe Yair outpost. At 7:20 pm, when the police left, the Palestinians first and then the soldiers dismantled the second road block.

The village of Bir al Idd is located at the entrance of the Masafer Yatta area, where the inhabitants are threatened of eviction by the Israeli army. In that area the Israeli government established the “Firing Zone 918”, namely a permanent military training area. The Palestinians are waiting for the High Court final decision about the legality of that military zone, but in the meantime the movement restrictions continue.

Nevertheless the Palestinian communities of the South Hebron Hills area are still strongly involved in the use of the nonviolence as a way to resist to the Israeli occupation.

Operation Dove has maintained an international presence in At-Tuwani and the South Hebron Hills since 2004.
