Lawmaker revives bill to make Israel a Jewish nation-state, drop Arabic as official language | | Jonathan Lis - Haaretz - One of the primary purposes of the controversial bill, which was shelved after Elkin first proposed it, is to grant primacy to the Jewish character of the state over its democratic character. Finance Minister Yair Lapid, who heads the Yesh Atid party, and Justice Minister Tzipi Livni (Hatnuah) have said they would vote against such a law.
This was the second time MK Zeev Elkin (Likud), chairman of the foreign affairs committee, sponsored the Basic Law on Israel as the Nation State of the Jewish People bill. He also cosponsored it during the Knesset’s previous term.

"Craig Corrie, Rachel’s father, expressed some optimism that the panel of three justices appeared more receptive than those from Haifa. He then remarked, “I hope that the [Supreme Court] understands the issues. They understand what it means to protect civilians and how important that is. That they reverse the trend of the Israeli military having impunity for what they do. It has to be questioned. And I hope they do that.” Now that the appeal has been heard, the family and supporters will have to wait until a decision is made." ca | 23/5/2014 |

Traveling Through Palestine While Black | | Bill Fletcher Jr--In the first several days after returning from Israel and Occupied Palestine, I dreamed of Palestine each night. It was never a pleasant dream. While I cannot remember the details, I was always left with a feeling of anxiety and insecurity. In that sense the dreams matched the realities of the Palestinians, be they citizens of Israel or residents of the Occupied Territories. It also corresponded to the emotions raised in a recent trip in which I participated.dn | 17/5/2014 |

Livni: Israeli settlements are to blame for failure of talks | | Haaretz - Justice Minister and chief Israeli negotiator Tzipi Livni said Friday that the settlements are preventing Israel from reaching a resolution with the Palestinians.
"The settlers want to prevent us from living a normal life and do not accept the authority of the law," Livni told Army Radio on Friday.
Echoing U.S. special envoy Martin Indyk`s comments Thursday night that settlements undermine negotiations and could "drive Israel into an irreversible binational reality," Livni said that the settlers "are preventing us from reaching a resolution," adding that "settlement construction makes it impossible to defend Israel around the world."
