Boris Johnson: ‘Balfour clause to protect existing communities has not been met’ | | Jewish News (UK) - In an article marking the Centenary of the still-
controversial Balfour Declaration, British Foreign Secretary Boris
Johnson expressed pride about his predecessor, Lord Balfour, supporting the creation of a "Jewish National Home" in
Palestine. Johnson notes, however, that Balfour’s “famous and
crucial proviso” - that “nothing shall be done which may prejudice
the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities” -
had not been met. In a Daily Telegraph article, Johnson states that "there is no
contradiction in being a friend of Israel… and also being deeply
moved by the suffering of those affected and dislodged by its birth.
I have no doubt that the only viable solution to the conflict
resembles the one first set down on paper by Lord
Peel, in the report of the Royal Commission on Palestine in 1937,
that is the vision of two states for two peoples." Johnson reiterated traditional British foreign policy as to the border between the states, which should be based on that before 1967 and both
should share Jerusalem as their capital. [ak]

Did British Mandate pave way for Israeli occupation? | | Linah Alsaafin - Al Jazeera - "Anyone who looks at the methods the British used in Palestine during the 1930s will see strong parallels with what Israel is doing today," said David Cronin, journalist and author of Balfour`s Shadow.
One such tactic was punitive house demolitions, carried out as a measure of deterrence.
Another was administrative detention, or the internment of prisoners for an indefinite period of time without subjecting them to trial or charges. Ahron Bregman, a professor at the department of war studies at King`s University, said that the British trained Haganah members in military tactics during the Arab Revolt.
"In fact, the best future Jewish military minds, such as Moshe Dayan and Yigal Allon, were trained by the British to fight against the Arabs of Palestine." [bz]

In the crosshairs: Israel`s war of attrition on political dissent | | Edo Konrad - +972 - The collapse of the Oslo process and the consequent foundering of the peace camp gave rise to a galvanized brand of right wing, one that sought to carefully undo the work of its predecessors in the Zionist Left. Doing so required a number of carefully crafted steps: supplanting peace negotiations with endless settlement building; creating physical and psychological distance between Israelis and the reality in the West Bank and Gaza; marking Palestinian citizens of Israel, long suspected as fifth columnists by the Israeli establishment, as enemies of the state; and silencing political dissidents.
