As always when talking to journalists, Corbyn was asked about allegations of antisemitism within the Labour Party, to which he replied "there is no place whatsoever for antisemitism in our society”. Asserting `anti-Semitism`, Camp Ramah rejects IfNotNow alumnis` criticism of IsraelAiden Pink - The Forward - There are 15 Ramah camps across the United States, Canada and Israel, where more than 10,000 Jewish youth and teens gather to grow and goof around — and of course, learn about Judaism. But some of the alumni, looking back, have misgivings about what the camp told them of Israel. “I wasn’t taught about the occupation, that the Palestinians are people with a rich culture. That’s the kind of thing that makes you look back on the army nights that were seemingly so fun, and make you go, ‘Oh, why do I glorify the army?" says Aviva Schwartz, a camp alumna and IfNotNow activist, involved in the campaign to change the camp`s Israeli curriculum. After some intitial willingness by Rabbi Mitchell Cohen of the Ramah administration to "engage" with the dissident alumni, Ramah came out with a harsh statement:"The camps wouldn’t allow `anti-Israel, anti-Zionist or anti-Semitic` education". “As someone who went as a camper to three different Ramahs, who worked as a counselor for seven years, to say that I’m an anti-Semite, it hurts,” Schwartz said. Trump ambassador blocks scrutiny of IsraelNAHAL TOOSI - Politico - In the email to colleagues, he rejected the idea that his embassy needed to enhance its scrutiny of military aid, saying he did “not believe we should extend the new [guidelines] to Israel at this time.” “Israel is a democracy whose army does not engage in gross violations of human rights,” Friedman wrote, adding that Israel “has a robust system of investigation and prosecution in the rare circumstance where misconduct occurs.” Besides, he added, “it would be against [U.S.] national interests” to take a step that could limit Israel’s access to military equipment – “especially in a time of war.” [bz] 19/6/2018

After international pressure, Netanyahu postpones for third time demolitions in Khirbet Susya Yoav Zitun, Itamar Eichner - Ynet - The demolition of illegal Palestinian homes in Khirbet Susya is seen as one of the symbols of the Palestinian battle in the West Bank, and Israel has been under heavy international pressure—mainly in recent weeks—to prevent the evacuation which would have received wide international coverage. The demolition may have also been postponed due to the upcoming visit of US President Donald Trump’s envoy to the Middle East, Jason Greenblatt, and his special advisor and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, this weekend. `They Told Me I Couldn`t Enter`: Israeli Public Pool Separates Bedouin From Jews Almog Ben Zikri - Haaretz - The separation is the result of the pool establishing designated hours during which only members may use the pool, even though this is not specified in its regulations. However, a number of non-member residents said they have never encountered this condition and often use the pool on Saturdays with a one-time payment. The Palestinians who never leftStuart Braun - Le Monde Diplomatique - ixty unarmed protestors were killed last month by Israeli military on the Gaza border, on the day that the US inaugurated its new embassy in Jerusalem, outraging the world; the Palestinians had been, in part, commemorating the Nakba, the catastrophe of the displacement of so many from the new state of Israel 70 years ago. The Great March of Return movement argues for the refugees’ right to come back to their ancestral lands. Yet some communities never left. Staying in an Arab area south of Tel Aviv (1), I realised that Christian and Muslim Arabs and Jewish Israelis were, despite the divisive policies and rightward march of the Israeli government, still living together in a microcosm of what was once a very diverse part of the world.-rh6/6/2018

Knesset Council Bans Bill to Define Israel as State for All Its Citizens Jonathan Lis - Ha`aretz - Knesset legal adviser Eyal Yinon clarified in a statement that, “it is hard to not see such a proposal as one that seeks to deny Israel’s existence as the state of the Jewish people, and therefore, and in accordance with Article 75(e) of the regulations, the Knesset presidium is qualified to prevent its submission.” The bill would change Israel from the nation-state of the Jewish people to a state in which there is equal status from the point of view of nationality for Jews and Arabs." The legal adviser also said that the legislation seemed to be aimed at altering basic principles – for example, by essentially cancelling the Law of Return (which declares the right of every Jew to immigrate to Israel), determining instead that receipt of Israeli citizenship will be based on a person’s familial affiliation to another citizen of the state. In addition, wrote Yinon, the bill negates the principle according to which the symbols of the state reflect the national revival of the Jewish people, in addition to rejecting Hebrew language as the principal language of the state.[ak]5/6/2018
