No, democracies don`t have `cultural loyalty` laws Edna Harel-Fisher - Times of Israel Blogs - Culture Minister Miri Regev¡¦s press conference yesterday, where she angrily lashed out at Finance Minister Kahlon and recently resigned Defence Minister Lieberman, marked the hopeful death of the "Culture Loyalty" bill, at least for the time being. The bill seeks to grant the minister holding the culture and arts portfolio the authority to censor culture in Israel, and to make funding to cultural institutions contingent on the content of their activities, based on the minister¡¦s sole personal judgement - ostensibly in order to "defend the state¡¦s values and symbols". The increasing disintegration of Netanyahu`s ruling coalition and the principled position taken by a handful of a few surviving right-wing liberals has for the time being gotten this idea off the agenda - though it may well be revived at some later time. Hamas trying to challenge Iron DomeYoav Zitun - Ynet - Hamas and Islamic Jihad have been making an unprecedented supreme effort in this round of fighting to overpower the Iron Dome missile defense system with relatively new launching methods. Among other things, the Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip have been firing heavy barrages of dozens (at times over 50) of rockets within less than 10 minutes. There were two such barrages so far, on Monday afternoon and overnight. The objective was to make the IDF quickly go through all of the interceptor missiles that can be fired without recharging, so some rockets could get through the cracks. [bz] 13/11/2018

Israel lawmakers to debate death penalty for Palestinian `terrorists`AFP/Middle East Eye - Israel`s parliament will renew debate next week on a bill that would make it easier to sentence Palestinian attackers to death, Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said. The bill, which passed a preliminary vote by the full parliament in January, would ease the requirements military courts in the occupied West Bank must meet to sentence Palestinians convicted of "terrorist" crimes to death. As the law stands now, a panel of three military judges must unanimously approve any death penalty in military courts. The new bill, planned by members of Lieberman`s Yisrael Beitenu party at his behest, would change the requirement to a majority instead of unanimity. "Death Penalty to Terrorists" had been one of the planks of Lieberman`s elections campaign in 2015. Lieberman`s rival on the extreme right, Education Minister Bennet, had been accusing Lieberman of "taking tough but acting softly". With new elections coming near, Lieberman feels obliged to make a show of toughness, and for the same reason PM Netanyahu now supports the death penalty bill. [ak] 6/11/2018

It Is a New Era, But China’s Balancing Act Will Fail in the Middle EastRamzy Baroud - CounterPunch - “The political division of Arab countries, the wars in Syria and elsewhere have pushed Palestine down from being a top Arab priority into some strange bargain involving ‘regional peace’ as part of Trump’s so-called ‘Deal of the Century’. Traveling the world as a Palestinian on an Israeli passport+972 Magazine - "When I traveled to Morocco last year, I was escorted from the airport by security — for my protection, because of my Israeli passport — and greeted with “Shabbat Shalom.” When I told the airport official “thank you, but I am not Jewish,” he responded, “it does not matter.” In 2013, I applied for a visa to conduct research in Egypt. The application has been pending ever since. I did not really know what happened until recently when my Egyptian friend, whose address I had used on the application, finally told me that Egyptian intelligence officers had come to her house and questioned her about her relationship with “this Israeli student,” even though I wrote my name in Arabic on the application. My Israeli passport trumped my Palestinian heritage." ca 2/11/2018
