"The signatories condemn Israel’s “shameful” use of Eurovision, which has a strong following among LGBTQIA communities, to “distract attention from its war crimes against Palestinians” and “forward its pinkwashing agenda, the cynical use of gay rights to distract from and normalize Israel’s occupation, settler colonialism and apartheid.”" - id | 31/1/2019 |

Angela Davis Won an Award. It Was Revoked. Now It’s Been Reinstated. | | Niraj Chokshi - The New York Times - Last fall the Birmingham Civil
Rights Institute announced that Professor Angela Davis would receive
its annual award. However, the award was rescinded on January 4,
following a campaign launched by Larry Brook of the "Southern Jewish
Life" magazine, claiming that Davis` support for the BDS
movement constituted "antisemitism". The Institute justified
its decision in a (since-deleted) statement asserting that
"Professor Davis does not meet all of the criteria on which the
award is based.” This brought on the Institute a storm of protests
from the opposite direction. Angela Davis herself reaffirmed both
her support of the Palestinians and her strong opposition to
Antisemitism, and was going to travel to Birmingham anyway and get
an alternate award initiated by various other groups. The final
stage (as of now): the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute reversed
itself again and declared that “Dr. Angela Davis, a daughter of
Birmingham, is highly regarded throughout the world as a human-
rights activist”, that “her credentials in championing human rights
are noteworthy” and that she would indeed get the award as
originally planned. [ak]

The Freedom Theatre presents: `Us Too... Women of Palestine` | | The Freedom Theatre - An original production and urgent protest inspired by Aeschylus’s play “The Suppliant Women” and performed by women from across Palestine involved with Interpeace’s programme in Palestine, and hoping to pursue theatre school. Taking refuge in a holy place, asking God and the citizens of the city to grant them asylum, these women are running not from war, or famine or occupation, but from
men. Directed by Zoe Delemere Lafferty and Ahmed Tobasi with an all-
female cast, this production is a juxtaposition of the original
text, as well as powerful personal stories of harassment, fights to
be educated, a choice in marriage, and dreams of determining their

Israel`s Nation-State Law also discriminates against Mizrahi Jews | | Orly Noy - +972 - Over 50 prominent Israeli Jews of Mizrahi origin filed a petition to the High Court of Justice demanding it strike down the Jewish Nation-State Law, saying it discriminates against both Palestinian citizens and Jewish Mizrahi citizens of Israel. They criticize not only the demotion of the Arabic language but also a clause in the law that establishes Jewish settlement “as a national value”, as every time Israel takes it upon itself to demographically “re-engineer” the land, it harms Mizrahim. This process hinders their access to highly-valued land through admissions committees, which allow communities across the country to reject housing applicants based on their “social suitability”, pushing Mizrachim into the country’s underserved geographical periphery [bz] | 8/1/2019 |
