Exhibition at the Gaza border: the history of a destroyed Palestinian village. | | Ishay Friedman - Makor Rishon - The "White House Gallery” is located
in the only remaining house of the former Palestinian village of Al-
Ma’in, whose site is now taken up by the kibbutzim Nir-Oz and Nirim.
The Gallery hosts an exhibition presenting the history of that
destroyed village, initiated by activist Eitan Bronstein Aparicio.
Refugees from Al-Ma’in nowadays reside in Khan-Younis in the Gaza
Strip - just a short distance away, but on the other side of an
impassable border. Bronstein Aparicio says "The exhibition aims at
transcending the violent spatial fracture imposed by the military
force”. One of the sons of the village is the Palestinian-British
geographer and engineer Salman Abu Sitta, who has provided to the
exhibition important work regarding the documentation of the
Palestinian Nakba. The 94 year old Haim Shilo, a founder of kibbutz
Nirim, has opposed the exhibition and argues that the other members
of the kibbutz should not collaborates with it". "What do you want
me to say? It was war, and they lost. Anyway, I remember these Abu
Sittas, even then they were a tribe of rioters and trouble-makers".

London Cyclists Ride in Support of Palestinian Cause | | IMEMC - For the fourth consecutive year, hundreds of British
cyclists have joined the “Big Ride for Palestine” - taking a 36-mile
circuitous rout through the streets of London, bearing Palestinian
flags and ringing their bike bells, so as to raise attention for the
conditions of the Palestinians, and to raise money for a Palestinian
charity. Before hopping on their bikes in North Kensington, the
riders heard Palestinian national football team player Mahmoud
Sarsak, who had gone on a three-month hunger strike while being
detained by Israeli authorities - now released and recovered enough
to deliver an impassioned speech to the cyclists. Since the Big Ride
started it has raised more than £130,000 (161,000 US dollars) for
Palestinian charities. Organizers say this year the crowd was double
the size of last year’s, and think they may have raised a record
amount.[ak]

Thousands Visit London’s 2019 Palestine Expo | | IMEMC - British groups supporting the Israeli government failed in
their efforts to prevent the holding of the 2019 Palestine Expo
events in London. Organized by Friends of Al-Aqsa, a UK-based NGO
working to defend the human rights in Palestine, thousands of people
attended the two-day event.
Virtual reality tours of Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque and exhibits on
the struggles of providing healthcare under Gaza’s blockade have
been on show at the Palestine Expo in London this weekend. Being the
largest event of its type in Europe, organizers have described it as
a way to experience Palestinian culture and listen at the same time
to thought-provoking discussions about the Israeli occupation. The
event includes discussions on US president Donald Trump’s so-called
deal of the century, Gaza’s Great March of Return protests, the
blockade on Gaza, and Israel’s Nation State law.[ak] | 23/7/2019 |

Touring the Israeli Occupation: Young U.S. Jews Get an Unflinching View | | David M. Halbfinger - New York Times - Birthright Israel`s free
trips have become a rite of passage for hundreds of thousands of
young American Jews. But Birthright’s avoidance of the Israeli
occupation of the West Bank has made it the target of angry protests
by left-leaning Jewish activists. For sheer ambition, no critique
has approached this week’s attempt by the liberal lobbying group J
Street to map out an alternative route for Birthright’s tours. The
organizers said they embraced Birthright’s goal of helping young
American Jews connect with Israel and with their Jewishness, but
that they also needed to be exposed to the realities of the
occupation. After several upbeat days hiking in the Galilee,
learning about the kibbutz movement and bonding over buffets and
Israeli pop songs, the J Street cohort took a sharp left turn into
territory where Birthright does not go. In the West Bank settlement
of Har Gilo, they received a harsh history lesson from a veteran
opponent of the occupation. Then they toured an impoverished, water-
starved Palestinian village that Israeli settlers want to demolish,
and visited the city of Hebron, where repeated outbreaks of violence
have turned an entire Palestinian business district into a ghost
town.[ak] | 16/7/2019 |

‘Mad’ Magazine Told the Truth About War, Advertising, and the Media | | Jeet Heer -
The Nation
"In Mad, McCarthy and other senators are performing for the TV
camera and work their parliamentary antics to fit the time allotted
to them by a commercial sponsor. Politics, the story suggests, is
just another TV show. The sting of this message has only gotten
sharper under the presidency of Donald Trump, Fox News addict and
Roy Cohn’s proud political acolyte. Mad was often rude, tasteless,
and childish—which made it all the more potent as a tributary of
youth culture. The kids who read Mad learned from it to distrust
authority, whether in the form of politicians, advertisers or media
figures. That was a lesson that successive generations took to
heart. " ca | 13/7/2019 |

`Who says we must be Ambassadors of Israel?` - Arab pupils reject propaganda course | | Judith Sudilovsky - The Media Line / Y-net - "Whether you want to or
not, you are going as ambassadors of Israel" was the message given
to high school pupils going abroad on trips organized by the
Education Ministry. In a course made obligatory for all participants
in such trips, they were told that in meeting foreign youngsters
they must uphold "“Israel`s two basic principles: a Jewish and a
democratic state", and that when meeting people who "only know
Israel as a country with the Intifada and where Israeli soldiers
shoot Palestinians" they must turn the conversation to "more
positive issues" such as Israel`s hi-tech achievements or Israel`s
toleration of LGBT. The Masar School in Nazareth, backed by the
Adalah Legal Center, strongly protests: "The course`s content is
mainly political, biased and transmitted from a very narrow and one-
sided perspective." Pupils are required to answer
multiple-choice exams, which allow for only one correct answer. The Masar School does not accept the answer considered correct by the ultra Jewish Nationalist Naftali Bennet who as Education Minister
personally initiated this course. [ak] | 9/7/2019 |

“From Here, From There” - exhibition in the one remaining house of the 1948 destroyed village al-Ma`in | | Eitan Bronstein Aparicio - De-Coloniser - "The White House Gallery”
in kibbutz Nir Oz is located in the only house still standing of the
village al-Ma`in, destroyed in 1948. A new exhibit by Eitan
Bronstein Aparicio will present there the story of that Palestinian
village. The historical and geographical surrounding of the gallery
will be shown with the involvement of the refugees from al-Ma`in who
most of them are living in Khan Yunis, 8 km away in the Gaza Strip.
Ahmad Salman Saqer Abu Sitta is the grandson of the man who built
the house of the gallery. In the invitation photo he`s pointing at
the lands of his village from his current home in Khan Yunis. He can
only say "I`m from there" but can`t return, nor even visit his
hometown. This exhibit is an attempt to overcome the fragmentation
of the space by violent military power and control. [ak] | 9/7/2019 |
