Who are the Israeli protesters at Netanyahu’s doorstep? | | Robert Swift - +972 Magazine - The people who have been
taking to the streets over the last two weeks — in numbers
unprecedented in recent years — can be roughly divided into there
main categories. Many protesters demand that Netanyahu resign,
arguing that he is corrupt and is pushing an anti-democratic agenda.
A prominent symbol at the protests is the black flag, representing
the
death of democracy in Israel, which protesters often wave on bridges
over highways across the country. Others have been wearing t-shirts
and carrying posters that say “Crime Minister,”. Another gripe comes
from younger protesters who are frustrated by the bleak economic
options on their horizon, struggling to provide for their families
or to prevent their business from going under during the pandemic,
even as the prime minister is focused on granting himself tax
rebates. A minority among the protesters can be termed the anti-
occupation camp, calling for a change in Israel`s attitude to the
Palestinians, expressing solidarity with the US Black Lives Matter
movement and revulsion at the recent fatal shooting by Jerusalem
police of Iyad al-Hallaq, an autistic Palestinian man. Of the 15
people interviewed for this story, two or three seemed to place
oppression of Palestinians as their central reason for protesting,
with a similar number mentioning the occupation after first
referring to corruption.[ak]

Right wingers furious at Haifa`s bid to honour Egyptian diva | | AFP/Y-net - Haifa Mayor Einat Kalisch-Rotem said the naming of a
Haifa street for the late Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum "highlights
the diversity of the city, which represents a model of co-existence
between Arabs and Jews" and noted that the Egyptian singer had
performed in Haifa in the 1930s, when the city was in British
mandatory Palestine. Outraged right wingers such as Yair
Natanyahu, the PM`s son, condemned the move as "crazy", quoting Umm
Kulthum`s support for Palestinian armed struggle and for the Egypt`s
war with Israel in 1967. Israeli musician Ariel Cohen said that some
Jews with Arab roots "grew up with Umm Kulthum," and noted that one
of her most famous songs, "Enta Omri", was translated into Hebrew.
"Umm Kulthum is not an enemy," Cohen said. Even if she sang
patriotic songs during conflict between Egypt
and Israel before the neighbours signed a 1979 peace, "it is
natural for singers to sing patriotic songs in times of war," Cohen
added. The singer died in 1975 and did not witness the Israeli-
Egyptian peace. [ak]
