Knesset advances bill banning Breaking the Silence from schools | | Lidar Gravé-Lazi - Jerusalem Post - By a vote of 35 in favor and 23
opposed, the Knesset passed in its First Reading a bill that would
authorize the Education Minister to ban from schools organizations
whose activity is deemed to be "harmful to IDF soldiers" or to
“undermine the goals of the state education system" - and the bill
defines "a meaningful service in the IDF" as part of these goals.
Though "Breaking the Silence" is not explicitly named, it is clearly
the main target.
MK Michal Rozin (Meretz) said that Breaking the Silence is “an
organization of soldiers and commanders in the army, who call on the
Government to change its policy of occupation. These are our boys
and girls who you send to protect your settlements at the price of
damage to the State of Israel." Breaking the Silence itself focused
on Education Minister Bennett, whose party initiated and backed the
bill. “For a year and a half Bennett has made infinite failed
attempts to prevent us from meeting teenagers from across the
country. Those who are harming the IDF are the politicians, like
Bennett, who are sending us to maintain rule over the Palestinians,
and who are silent when settlers attack soldiers and Palestinians as
a routine. Face it, Naftali - the only way to stop us is to end the
occupation,” the group tweeted. [ak] | 27/2/2018 |

Under the banner: “Anti-expulsion, pro-south Tel Aviv,” some 20,000 asylum seekers, supporters, participate in protest | | Ynet - Shula Keshet, activist in the movement “South Tel Aviv Against the Expulsion said: “They say that it will begin on Passover, and I say that the Holiday of Freedom will be stained with the disgrace of the expulsion. South Tel Aviv is for renewal, for public housing, for spreading the refugees throughout the country and for a dignified life for all. Zehava Vaknin, another local resident: “Our daily difficulties did not begin with the arrival of the asylum seekers. Why jail people who have fled war? I was scared to walk the streets, not because of the asylum seekers, but because the streets are so dark in the neighborhood.” Tugud Omer Adam from Sudan: “We did not choose to come to south Tel Aviv. They are not handing out maps to Levinski Street in the Sinai Desert. When we arrived in Israel, we were handed a one-way ticket to the New Bus Station.” [The demonstration was supported by the untiring peace group Omdim Yachad (Standing Together)-bz] | 27/2/2018 |

Joining the Canadian Boat to Gaze is a Jewish thing to do | | Rabbi Lucia Pizarro - Jewish Liberation Theology Institute /
Canadian Boat to Gaza - The stigma of living life as a minority has
forever shaped Jewish history and the histories of many other
peoples. Throughout history, from Poland to Iraq, from Argentina to
South Africa, from Brooklyn to Mississippi, Jews have taken up their
quest for justice, and their desire for a more just world, by
joining with others in collective struggles. The State of Israel’s
oppression of the Palestinian people contradicts and betrays these
long histories of Jewish participation in liberation struggles. Thus,
I invite you to join me in my support for the Canadian Boat to Gaza,
and its insistence on ending the illegal and immoral blockade
imposed by the Israeli State on over 2 million Palestinian civilians
living in the Gaza Strip. [ak]

`If they wanted to go to the bathroom, in their own home, they needed my permission` | | Breaking the Silence - BBC HARDtalk - "The mission was, again and
again, to go into a family home in the middle of the night, push the
family into one room and make the rest of the apartment into a
temporary military position. If they wanted to go to the bathroom,
they needed my permission. I remember especially a physician and his
wife in Nablus. He was kind enough to talk with me and try to
explain what it means to be a Palestinian." Avner Gvaryahu, Breaking
the Silence`s executive director, speaking with BBC`s Stephen Sackur. [ak]

Worldwide campaign in solidarity with Hebron | | | 13/2/2018 |
|
“Dismantle the Ghetto, settlers out of Hebron” | | Hisham Sharabati - Hebron Defense Committee - On November 1, 2015,
the Tel Rumeida neighborhood was declared a closed military zone, in order to "protect" Israeli settlers who established themselves there.
Palestinians who are not residents have been denied access to this
part of the city. Palestinian residents were forced to register with
the army, or else risk being barred from their homes.(...) Thousands
have been expelled from their homes, thousands of shops were closed.
The occupation and its illegal settlers have turned the lives of
200,000 native Palestinians into a living hell. We call for a
world wide campaign of solidarity with Hebron towards the anniversary
of the Ibrahimi Mosque Massacre of Nov. 25th 1994, when an Israeli settler killed 29 people and wounded more than a hundred. [ak] | 13/2/2018 |
