Israelis and Palestinians Remember the Slain, Home Alone or Online | | David M. Halbfinger - New York Times - Civil-defense sirens sounded
at 8 p.m. to mark the start of Israel’s solemn Memorial Day
observance, but unlike in ordinary years, this year`s remembrance of
fallen soldiers or victims of terrorism came with most of the
country already on lockdown. But the coronavirus was a boon to an
alternative ceremony that for 15 years has drawn together bereaved
families from both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. With
Israelis in a studio in Tel Aviv and Palestinians speaking from
Ramallah, on the West Bank, the live-streamed event reached its
biggest audience yet, organizers said: At least 170,000 people
watched worldwide on more than 60 different online channels like
YouTube and Facebook. John Lyndon, director of the Alliance for
Middle East Peace, called it the biggest joint Israeli-Palestinian
event in history. Over 90 minutes Monday night, poems and songs in
Hebrew and Arabic punctuated heartfelt testimonials by people like
Hagai Yoel, an Israeli whose older brother was killed in 2002 on a
military rescue mission in Jenin in the West Bank, and who said he
couldn’t bear to imagine his own 13-year-old son in uniform when he
turns 18.
“I know that in order to resolve a conflict, both sides have to give
up on something, because if I take it all, the other side will
remain frustrated and despairing,” Mr. Yoel said. “Such a situation
will condemn us to perpetual war.”
And Yaqub al-Rabi, a Palestinian whose wife, Aisha, was killed in
2018 by Israeli settlers who stoned their car just before their
daughter’s wedding, said he believed in “divine justice” but that,
“even after paying such a huge price, I will not let my anger lead
me to revenge.” [ak]

Due to Coronavirus, Gaza Freedom Flotilla will saill later than planned | | Canada Boat to Gaza - With the help of supporters, we have
purchased a boat for this voyage, and further donations will help
equip this boat with vital safety, communications and other
materials. In light of global health restrictions on travel and
public gatherings, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition has decided to
delay our planned departure towards Gaza. We had initially planned
to visit several southern European ports in April and May of this
year, and head for Gaza at the end of May, to coincide with the 10th
anniversary of the Israeli attack on the Mavi Marmara. The revised
departure time will be defined based on ongoing reviews of public
health conditions worldwide and specifically in the ports we are
planning to visit.[ak] | 28/4/2020 |

71 days to stop annexation | | Jeremy Ben-Ami - J Street - Even in the face of an unprecedented pandemic, Netanyahu and the Israeli right remain determined to carry out the illegal, unilateral annexation of Israeli settlements while Trump remains in office. [bz] | 21/4/2020 |

Israelis accuse Netanyahu of endangering democracy | | ODED BALILTY - AP News - “You don’t fight corruption from within. If you’re inside, you’re part of it,” said Yair Lapid during the 2000 strong demo filling Tel Aviv`s Rabin Square under corona restrictions. [bz] | 21/4/2020 |

2nd Appeal in COVID-19 Crisis: PCHR Calls for Immediate Release of Minors, Women, Patients and Elderlies among Palestinian Prisoners in Israeli Jails | | IMEMC - Israeli authorities have neglected the continued and urgent requests for the immediate release of those among the 5000 Palestinian prisoners who are considered at an increased risk of contracting COVID-19, the elderly and the chronically ill in particular.
Making matters worse, Physicians for Human Rights received a shocking decision by the Israeli High Court of Justice (HCJ) rejecting its petition to the Court demanding it order the Israel Prison Service (IPS) and the Ministry of Health to ensure proper medical services are provided for Palestinian prisoners, and take necessary measures to prevent the spread of the virus within the prison system. The Court had determined that the petition did not include any legal demands that warrants its intervention... [bz]

Settlement extension under the cover of the Coronvirus | | Michal Hai - Ta`ayush - Taking advantage of the general closure (imposed by Israel to prevent Corona-
virus spread), the Israeli settlers are constructing a series of new settler
outposts on the hill range around Auja, expanding and building in the illegal
outposts already existing in the South Hebron Hills, invade with their flocks
sown Palestinian fields inside Area C and causing extensive damage to their
Palestinian neighbors, nearly always without any interference by Israeli army
and police; Palestinian communities in the South Hebron Hills have put up a
network of checkpoints manned by volunteers in order to prevent the
spreading of Corona among the rural communities there and the urban center
of Yatta – the security official of Carmel settlement summoned the army in
order to dismantle such a checkpoint at the entrance to the Palestinian
hamlet of Umm Al Kheir; a fundraising campaign to aid shepherd families in
need in the Palestinian Jordan Valley who are on the brink of famine
following the state of emergency – update and link for donations at the end

Donations for needy families in Gaza | | | 14/4/2020 |

Donations for needy families in Gaza | | Olivia Zémor - CAPJPO-EuroPalestine - Palestinians must face the
coronavirus crisis in dire conditions. Those living in the Westbank
and East Jerusalem continue to be subjected to Israeli army raids on
families` homes with endangerment, as well as attacks by settlers
(78% increase). The 35,000 Palestinians who have agreed to go to
work in Israel to survive are treated much worse than cattle and
thrown on the road at checkpoints when they show symptoms of covid-
19. In the Gaza Strip, in addition to the total destitution linked
to the blockade, Israel finds a way to spread toxic pesticides on
agricultural land and injure fishermen who go out to feed the
inhabitants. While donations cannot be a substitute for freedom, all
gestures of solidarity are welcome, as the UNRWA budget has been
cut, and many families in the Gaza Strip are finding it increasingly
difficult to survive.[ak] | 14/4/2020 |

Viral Occupation | | Who Profits - Monitoring developments in Palestine is crucial not because Palestine is an exceptional case, but precisely because it is not. As one political economist put it, Gaza (and Palestine more broadly) may be “the proverbial canary in the COVID-19 coal mine.”
There is no doubt that for Palestinians living under occupation, the acute shortage of testing kits, protective gear and ICU capacity is only the tip of the iceberg. A host of structural issues inevitably compound the virus’ devastating impact.
