In the Face of Netanyahu`s Threat to Democracy, Israel`s Opposition Makes Rare Show of Unity | | Chemi Shalev - Haaretz - An overflow crowd of close to 100,000, which exceeded the most optimistic expectations, came to see the leaders of the opposition parties standing together and speaking in one voice, after trying to avoid each other like the plague during the election campaign. From Kahol Lavan’s Benny Gantz and his partner Yair Lapid — who received the warmest welcome — through Labor’s Avi Gabbay and Meretz’s Tamar Zandberg, all the way to the surprise star of the show, Ayman Odeh of the predominantly Arab Hadash-Ta’al party, the speakers were more impassioned and their message sharper and more aggressive than in the past. Their audience, meanwhile, seemed angrier and more animated than ever, at least by the standards of the mostly well-to-do Tel Avivians who took part. (,,,) The importance of the demonstration wasn’t the fact it was held, but rather in the tense 24 hours that preceded it — when a vigorous left-wing campaign on social media compelled the Kahol Lavan organizers to issue a last-minute invitation to Odeh to participate. The vision of a joint Jewish-Arab front — the long-held dream of the Israeli left — suddenly came to life (,,,) It was Odeh’s appearance that electrified the crowd. [bz]

In July: Gaza Freedom Flotilla on the Chicago River | | Voices for Creative Nonviolence / Freedom Flotilla Coalition - July
18-20 will be three days of Chicago actions in support of freedom
for the people of Gaza, including a mini-flotilla of kayaks, canoes
and rowboats on the Chicago River. It is time to give Gazans
desperately-needed access to food, fuel, medicine, employment, &
basic human dignity! Since 2010, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition has
sent many international flotillas
sailing to Gaza to highlight the brutal violation of international
law and of Gazans’ human rights that is the Israeli government’s
lethal Gaza blockade. Col. (Ret.) Ann Wright, veteran of four past
flotillas, and Gazan scholar/activist Jehad Abusalim will speak at
the Gaza Solidarity event at Chicago’s Grace Episcopal Church on

“This verdict is important because it tells the authorities not to interfere in creativity, not interfere with art,” Tatour’s attorney, Gaby Lasky, said after the hearing. “We are free, thinking people and your job is to allow creativity and expression, not make us censor ourselves and constantly fear persecution.”" - id | 17/5/2019 |

Eurovision defends “Greater Israel” logo | | Ali Abunimah -

"The organizers of the Eurovision Song Contest are defending their use of an official logo which appears to represent all of historic Palestine – including the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip – as part of Israel. In a letter to the Palestinian Authority foreign ministry on Wednesday, the European Broadcasting Union states that there was nothing intentional about the logo that depicts a stylized outline of historic Palestine – or “Greater Israel” as Zionists label it – including occupied territory that Israel is moving to annex in flagrant violation of international law." - id | 17/5/2019 |

Backed by Corbyn, over 3,000 march for Free Palestine in London | | Times of Israel - Leading the march commemorating the 71st anniversary of the “Nakba" was Ahed Tamimi, an 18-year-old icon who served an eight-
month sentence in an Israeli prison for slapping an Israeli soldier
on film.
Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn expressed
his support. “We cannot stand by or stay silent at the continuing
denial of rights and justice to the Palestinian people. The Labour
Party is united in condemning the ongoing human rights abuses by
Israeli forces, including the shooting of hundreds of unarmed
Palestinian demonstrators in Gaza… demanding their rights."
He accused the British government of deafening silence, called for
condemnation of “the killing of demonstrators — including children,
paramedics and journalists – and other civilians, and demanded that
Britain “freeze arms sales to Israel.” Corbyn also criticized the
anticipated US peace plan: “If President Trump’s Middle East plan
is, as expected, an attempt to bury the Palestinians’ right to a
viable state alongside Israel, we will call on our government and
the international community to reject it decisively. No peace plan
can succeed at the expense of the rights of the Palestinian people.
That’s why a Labour government will recognise a Palestinian state
and press for an immediate return to meaningful negotiations, aimed
at achieving a lasting settlement based on UN resolutions,
international law and justice that has been too long denied.” [ak]

Actions in Paris: Gaza solidarity demonstration / boycott settler dates and clementines / help the children of Khan Younis | | Oliva Zémor - CAPJPO-EuroPalestine - Today, May 8 at 16:30, we
gather at the Place du Châtelet ŕ Paris, to express solidarity with
the people of Gaza. They had gone through a year of unarmed popular
demonstrations for the end of the siege and all they got was the
killing of hundreds of people and thousands of injured by the
Israeli army - and after Hamas did send rockets to Israel, they got
more than 20 people killed in intensive bombings of Gaza: men, women
and children. With the coming of Ramadan, we need to remind Paris
Muslims making extensive holiday shopping that Medjoul dates and
clementines exported by Israel and present in stores and on the
markets are often coming from settlements in the Occupied
Territories. And we ask for donations to help the children of Khan
Younis Refugee Camp have a real holiday this year.[ak] | 7/5/2019 |
