Tribute to Gaza fishermen | | Leen Abu Said - "We are not numbers" - On Sept. 8, 2016, Israeli
naval forces opened fire on five Gaza fishermen, then detained them
and seized their boats. This week, one of those boats, owned by Abd
al-Muti Al-Habil, served as an open-air gallery for a tribute to the
fishermen of Gaza. To of these fishermen have been killed, twenty-
three arrested and six boats destroyed. Photographer Khalid Hashem,
documenting the fishermen`s lives, displayed 18 dramatic
photographs in an exhibit called “Hook,” dedicated to the some 3,000
Gazan fishermen who continue to take to the sea every day (compared
to the 10,000 who used to earn their living this way in 2000). [ak] | 29/8/2017 |

`Denial of treatment to Gaza cancer patients makes Israel unfit to host the International Biochemistry Congress` | | AURDIP (Assoc. des Universitaires Pour le Respect du Droit
International) - In September, the Israeli Society for Biochemistry
and Molecular Biology is due to host in Jerusalem the 42nd Congress
of the Federation of the European Biochemical Societies (FEBS). 89
acadmics, some of them Israeli, have signed a call for a boycott of
that conference. Among other things, the signatories note that "The
biochemistry of cancer is one of the themes of the FEBS Congress.
The five-year survival rate for breast cancer is as low as 30% in
Gaza, which Israel has besieged for the past ten years, as compared
to 86% in Israel. In 2016, only 44% of Gaza patients who requested
access to Israeli hospitals were admitted; more than half of those
refused entry were cancer patients." [ak] | 22/8/2017 |

Bands pull out of Berlin’s Pop-Kultur festival over Israeli sponsorship | | Ali Abunimah/Mohammad Abu Hajar - Electronic Intifada - Mohammad
Abu Haja - an artist who had been jailed for his activism by the
government of Syria and who got political asylum in Germany in 2014
- had spent a lot of time and energy in preparing a performance for
Berlin’s Pop-Kultur music festival. But when he learned that the
Israeli Embassy is among the festival`s sponsors, he had no
hestation in withdrawing. "There can be no participation in a festival
that accepts partnership with an embassy representing a state and a
government which openly declared on many different occasions anti-
Arab, anti-Muslim and anti-Black attitudes.” The Egyptian band Islam
Chipsy also withdrew from the festival, as did the Syrian DJ and
producer Samer Saem Eldahr, who goes by the name Hello Psychaleppo.

Former Israeli attorney-general: eviction of Sheikh Jarrah family will be unjust | | Maan - Israel’s former Attorney-General, Michael Ben Yair, denounced
the double standard built into Israeli law, whereby Jews can reclaim
property lost to them in 1948 while Palestinians are denied this
option. He spoke to a crowd of Palestinians and Israeli activists
who had gathered in solidarity in front of the home of the Shamasna
family in East Jerusalem`s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.
“My own family and the family of my cousin lived in Sheikh Jarrah
and were forced to leave the neighborhood in January 1948. They got
properties of Palestinians refugees on Jaffa Road and in the Katamon
neighborhood in west Jerusalem. Ben Yair said also, if Israel conducts land registration in Sheikh Jarrah, “he would demand that the ownership of the building that his family had would go to the Palestinians who live in it today.” [ak]

Power to the People: Why Palestinian Victory in Jerusalem is a Pivotal Moment | | Ramzy Baroud - CounterPunch - “This grassroot movement was made of
thousands of women, men and children. They included Zeina Amro, who
cooked daily for those who held steadfast outside the compound, was shot by a
rubber bullet in the head, yet returned to urge the men to stand their ground the
following day. It also includes the child Yousef Sakafi, whose chores included
splashing water over people as they sat endless hours under the unforgiving
sun, refusing to move. It also includes many Palestinian Christians who came
to pray with their Muslim brethren” [ry] | 7/8/2017 |
