`When the constitution becomes racist, it’s difficult to define what racism is’ | | Henriette Chacar -
+972
"In the year since the Israeli parliament passed the Jewish Nation-
State Law, the equivalent of a constitutional amendment that
declares Israel to be the exclusive nation-state of the Jewish
people and demotes the status of Arabic, not a whole lot has
changed...Palestinian and Israeli politicians, activists, and
thinkers have long engaged in a debate about Israel’s Jewish
identity, and whether the country can define itself as Jewish and
still be democratic. This law cuts straight through that debate,
says Hassan Jabareen, founder and director of Adalah, a legal
organization that focuses on Palestinian minority rights in Israel."

Will Russia succeed where the US has failed? | | Adnan Abu Amer -
Al-Monitor
"Putin told Abbas that international legitimacy is essential when it
comes to settling the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, that economic
support may not override a political solution to the conflict and
that he will work with the United States and Israel to promote a
two-state solution." ca

Palestinians in Israel reject Ehud Barak’s apology | | Maureen Clare Murphy -
The Electronic Intifada -
"His apology “lacks all value so long as no indictments have been filed against the Israeli police officers responsible for the October 2000 killings.” The gesture is empty as “police violence against Palestinian citizens of Israel continues to this very day,” Adalah added." - id | 25/7/2019 |

Israeli Jews must not alienate their non-Orthodox American brethren | | Attila Somfalvi -
Ynet -
"No matter how many times it has been said before, it certainly bears repeating - Israeli Jews have to embrace our American counterparts; we have to hold them tightly, for to exclude them because of who they marry is ultimately self-defeating." - id | 25/7/2019 |

Burning, but nothing urgent | | Yacov Ben Efrat -
Challenge -
"Needless to say, the health hazards and pollution in Arab communities will continue unabated. The lack of environmental awareness and the utter disregard for helping these communities out of the mess has not been addressed by any political party, Arab or other. As for the West Bank Palestinians, enclosed behind Israel’s separation barrier, they are threatened even more by air pollution, raw sewage flowing directly into river beds, open garbage dumps and non-investment in vital infrastructure." - id | 25/7/2019 |

Would Israel’s left succeed in uniting ahead of elections? Read more: https://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2019/07/israel-benny-gantz-ehud-barak-amir-peretz-yachimovich-left.html#ixzz5uFR5OByh | | Mazal Mualem -
Al-Monitor
"On the evening of July 18, it all became clear. The hints by Peretz
about wanting to add figures from the right were translated into an
agreement — secretly negotiated — with former Knesset member Orly
Levy-Abekasis. Levy-Abekasis served for many years as legislator for
Yisrael Beitenu. After leaving Yisrael Beitenu, she established her
own Gesher party. But Gesher failed to pass the Knesset-entry
threshold in the April elections...Peretz took an enormous gamble.
By unifying with Gesher he hopes to repeast the 2006 success, when
he served as party chair and managed to bring aboard quite a few
soft right-wing voters. On the other hand, it is doubtful whether a
similar move could take place in the Israel of 2019. All polls
indicate that the Likud is a large party with supporters that are
strongly attached to their leader, Prime Minister Netanyahu. More
than anything, Peretz distanced his natural partners." ca

Guardian Joins Labour Anti-Semitism Smear Campaign, Censors Editorial Cartoonist | | Richard Silverstein —
Tikun Olam
"The Guardian’s world-famous editorial cartoonist, Steve Bell, has
been censored by his editors. He created a 2-part cartoon
criticizing Labour MP and deputy Labour Party leader, Tom Watson,
for joining forces with the UK Israel Lobby and Tories seeking to
sabotage Party leader, Jeremy Corbyn. Watson has jumped on the
anti-Semitism bandwagon demanding that the Party engage in a major
purge of supposed anti-Semites within. The targets are almost
always members of officials who’ve voiced support for Palestinian
rights or criticized Israel as an apartheid state. Once again, and
for what feels like the thousandth time, none of these are anti-
Semitic in any way shape or form." ca | 20/7/2019 |

Ynet -
"Rabbi Rafi Peretz is a nice man, but he is also in possession of views far removed from mainstream Israeli society; and while his comments on `conversion therapy` were justifiably condemned, not a peep was heard about his plan to annex the West Bank and deny Palestinians the right to vote." - id | 18/7/2019 |

Trump’s Attack on Congressional Women of Color Weaponizes Hate, Anti-Semitism and Israel | | Richard Silverstein -
Tikun Olam -
"It is sad that no major national Jewish leaders have yet denounced this repulsive rhetoric. What pray, are they waiting for? The impact of Trump’s attacks endanger not only the Congress members targeted, but will further distance Americans who reject such smear politics, from Israel. It goes without saying that no Israeli leader would weigh in on this matter. After all, Netanyahu just met with a Ukrainian delegation that included an avowed neo-Nazi, and Yair “Baby Bibi” Netanyahu just tweeted support for British Islamophobe neo-Nazi, Tommy Robinson. Israel is well on its way to becoming the very thing we were all taught to hate in Hebrew school: fascists and Nazis." - id | 18/7/2019 |

Guest Op-Ed: Samaritan Values in understanding the facts in the Israel-Palestine conflict | | Froy Jimenez -
The Arab Daily News -
"The Center for Responsive Politics estimates that the Israeli government spent $34 million on lobbying in Washington since 2017. This is ironic, since 71% of American Jews have an unfavorable opinion of President Trump according to by a survey conducted in May of this year. So while President Trump is widely popular with Jews in Israel, he is not very favorable by Jewish-Americans in his own country." - id | 18/7/2019 |

US envoy to Israel demolishes American Bahrain conference achievements - whatever they were worth to begin with | | Akiva Eldar - Al Monitor - The sight of the US ambassador surrounded by radical right-wing activists and wielding a hammer to break through a mock wall in one of the most volatile compounds in the Middle East raises two scary options. One is that the US administration is deliberately playing with a keg of dynamite, not caring about the risk to Israeli and Palestinian lives. The other possibility is that the White House has lost control over its ambassador to Israel, a fellow traveler of the settlement movement and of its patrons Sheldon and Miriam Adelson and the Netanyahu family, whose representative Sara Netanyahu was also honored with a hammer blow at the event in the Palestinian neighborhood of Silwan. Open Letter to Chairman of the PLO and President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas | | Sam Bahour - Al-Quds/Al-Hadath - You found yourself drowning in the
quagmire of bilateral negotiations with a negotiating partner intent
on not reaching a deal. Instead of recalibrating our national
liberation movement strategy early on after Oslo’s five-year
deadline expired, you instead tipped the balance of your activities
toward advancing the future state apparatus. This was in defiance of
reality given Israel used every day to create more facts on the
ground toward making its military occupation a permanent reality.
Now that the US — the non-neutral mediator that you bet on during
the Oslo process — has shown its true colors under the Trump
administration, the reality demands action, real action, not simply
another principled position with its accompanying rhetoric.
Moving forward, we need to recalibrate our domestic priorities, more
towards liberation and less toward state building in the areas
physically under military occupation. Internationally, I would
continue the state recognition strategy that you correctly and
strategically undertook as Oslo collapsed. [ak] | 9/7/2019 |
