Palestinian woman shot, injured by Israeli forces at Qalandiya checkpointMa`an - According to Israeli police spokeswoman Luba al-Samri a “suspicious” Palestinian woman entered the vehicle lane of the checkpoint “seemingly carrying an object. The security guards noticed her and instructed her to stop but she ignored the instructions. The guards then started arrest procedures and neutralized the woman,” al-Samri using an Israeli forces term to indicate that a Palestinian was shot without specifying whether they were injured or killed. Al-Samri later clarified that the woman had been `lightly injured,` and that she had been `carrying a bag` in a way that raised the security guards` suspicions. The Qalandiya checkpoint is notorious for being confusing to navigate. [bz] 28/2/2017

Hanan Ashrawi: “We Are Seriously Worried”Hanan Ashrawi - The Cairo Review of Global Affairs - The problem is not negotiations. We’ve been negotiating since 1991. The problem is the commitment and the political will to respect international law and to have genuine negotiations that would really lead to ending the occupation and a peaceful solution. And [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu would like nothing better than an endless process of negotiations in order to buy more time to create more facts to destroy the two-state solution. So what we need would be a positive engagement and an involvement that would, on the one hand, curb Israeli violations, lead Israel to compliance with international law and create a system of accountability for Israel, but, at the same time, create a system of protections for the Palestinians and ensure that whatever negotiations that will emerge will be based on international law and will have clear objectives and a clear timeline.-rh23/2/2017
Guy Hirschfeld’s post on the Palestinian Jordan Valley:Guy Hirschfeld - Machsomwatch reports - While on our way we were already informed by phone that the bulldozer was seen on the road, escorted by the Civil Administration. Through our local contacts we located the forces. We will probably never quite understand the panic that seizes the locals when they feel that they’re next – some of them simply begin to evacuate their homes, knowing that the evil agents will not even let them get their meager possessions out in time.-rh 22/2/2017
The Trump-Netanyahu summit may have actually made things worseZvi Schuldiner - Global Il Manifesto - For Israel, the meeting makes the situation worse. The Israeli right now believes it can sell citizens on the annexation so dear to the nationalist and fundamentalist coalition that dominates the country. But polls surprisingly indicate that a majority of Israelis support the two-state solution. In this context, the ultra-right wants to use the apparent sympathy of racist Trump to continue with the advance of the settlements in the occupied territories. The settlements are not only a way to gain control of Palestinian lands, they are also a source of new obstacles to a possible or theoretical peace. They also increase the possibility of bloodshed.-rh 22/2/2017

Israeli authorities move to demolish entire Bedouin communityMa`an - Rights groups and Bedouin community members have sharply criticized Israel`s relocation plans for the Bedouin residing near the illegal Israeli settlement of Maale Adumim, claiming that the removal would displace indigenous Palestinians for the sake of expanding Israeli settlements across the occupied West Bank in violation of international law. Meanwhile, discussion of an Israeli bill seeking to annex Maale Adumim was postponed last month, reportedly until after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump held their first meeting after Trump`s inauguration. The meeting took place Wednesday... [bz]21/2/2017

Using art to heal: Battling cancer in Gaza : One Palestinian female artist`s battle with cancer in Gaza. Aljazeera - Aya Abdulrahman was informed by her doctors that she would be dead by the end of 2014. At 21, she had seven malignant tumours. "Your daughter has two months left to live. You cannot do anything. Go home," the doctor told Abdulrahman`s mother. The painful news, however, did not stop her from pursuing her dreams. Since childhood, all Abdulrahman wanted to do was become an artist and leave her mark on the world through art. Abdulrahman seized every opportunity that came her way to display her paintings and drawings across the Gaza Strip and abroad, from Los Angeles to Morocco. She participated in art competitions, worked with sick and disabled children in Gaza to have them express themselves through art, and trained youth in drama and acting. After undergoing a series of surgeries over a three-year span, the locally renowned artist recovered in 2015.-rh 16/2/2017
Since Trump Won, All Israel Is Talking About Annexation. Why?Naomi Zeveloff - Forward - In general terms, annexation means the political transfer of land. In the current Israeli context, it refers to the application of Israeli sovereignty to parts of the West Bank, which Israel captured and has occupied since 1967, and where Palestinians hope to build a state. Naftali Bennett, chief of the hard-line Jewish Home party, has a plan to annex Area C, for example, where hundreds of thousands of Israeli settlers live, and then offer citizenship to the less than 50,000 Palestinians living in that area.-rh16/2/2017
Palestinian Jordan Valley February 7, 2017 AM and PMNurit Popper, Daphne Banai, translated by Tal Haran - Machsomwatch report - Ali lives in Ras Al Ahmar with his wife Dalal and their five children. The place is highly fertile, its ground containing plenty of water. Ali, however, may not pump a single drop. Since the region has been declared a firing zone, many generations after Ali’s family began living there, he may not even introduce a tractor to carry water and feed for his flock. For three months Ali’s tractor as well as the tractors of 6 other residents have been held by the Civil Administration. These people call me on a daily basis, desperate – these tractors are as vital to them as hands and feet. Two weeks ago they were notified of the fine they must pay. They ran to the postal bank and paid. All of them. But then the Civil Administration got clever – now they must also sign a commitment not to re-introduce tractors into the area. What can they do with the tractor if it cannot bring them water? Without water, this is no less than expulsion. It has no other name!-rh 16/2/2017

Through the gate, an Israeli military jeep came driving quickly towards them. “Everyone ran but Ali was the slowest, so he didn’t get away, they caught up to him,” he said. - rh15/2/2017

This isn`t Israel`s first `land theft law,` it won`t be the lastOrly Noy - +972 - Congrats to the Israeli Knesset for passing the settlement “regulation law” (also known as the “normalization law” and the “formalization law”) earlier this week. The law retroactively legalizes the theft by Israeli settlers of land privately owned by Palestinians, largely land on which those settlements Israel calls “illegal outposts” were constructed — because their existence is illegal even under Israeli law.-rh9/2/2017
Netanyahu wants to repress my group, Breaking the Silence. May, don’t help him Yehuda Shaul - The Guardian - n Monday the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, met with his British counterpart, Theresa May. Among other things, he asked her to stop the UK government’s funding of the group I co-founded, Breaking the Silence, as well as other human rights organisations in Israel and Palestine. This is regardless of the fact that Breaking the Silence has not received funding from the British government since 2011. As an Israeli, it’s not my place to tell Netanyahu to stop interfering in decisions made by the British government. That’s something British citizens can do. What I can do is shed some light on the reason Netanyahu is so intent on stopping us, an organisation of soldiers who encourage public debate on the reality of occupation and the moral price it exacts from Israelis.-rh 8/2/2017

In their view, an Arab is a Bedouin who rides a donkey and lives in a shack, wears a galabiya and uses a cane. [bz]14/2/2017

Some 1,000 olive trees uprooted to build bypass road on ‘Azzun village landB`tselem - [background] On 21 December 2015, the head of the Civil Administration issued an expropriation order for 10.4 hectares of land earmarked for the bypass road. The order noted that the new road will “serve the public good” and improve mobility between Nablus and Qalqilya. In March 2016, the Palestinian village councils and landowners petitioned Israel’s High Court of Justice (HCJ) against the expropriation, on the grounds that the road will not serve all residents of the area but only settlers. On 16 November 2016, the HCJ denied the petition after accepting the state’s claim that the road is intended to serve the entire population of the area. The seizure of the land and uprooting of olive trees have severely harmed the landowners, who have lost a source of income and a major financial asset, as well as an open space that served all local residents for leisure and recreational activities. Palestinians in Nablus-area village say settlers cut down hundreds of olive, almond treesMa`an - The trees were planted two years after the eviction of the nearby Homesh settlement which was located in northwest Nablus. After the eviction, the Palestinian landowners obtained decisions from Israeli courts, including the Supreme Court, that neither settlers, nor Israeli forces would harass the landowners. However, in 2016 settlers started to "camp" in the area under protection of Israeli troops, making it very difficult for farmers to tend their fields and water their trees. [bz]7/2/2017

Why I, as a Proud Israeli, Want the World to Boycott Us Ilana Hammerman - Haaretz -As an Israeli citizen and a woman engaged in public life, I declare that the state does not respect my basic right to live according to my conscience. The Judaism it is forcing upon me is not my Judaism. Furthermore, the nationalist and racist fanaticism of the government (led by its interior, culture and education ministers) is becoming more and more extreme, and contrary to the values I hold most dear. These iniquities are an internal concern of Israeli society and I have the right – and for now, at least, also the possibility – to fight for their correction from within society.-rh1/2/2017
